Women's Soccer Gains 4-1 Win at Kalamazoo - Moves Into Tie for Fourth Place

KALAMAZOO - Needing a victory to remain in the hunt for a spot in the
four-teamMIAA Tournament, Calvin did just that, defeating Kalamazoo College 4-1
Thursdayafternoon at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex. The victory bumps
Calvininto a tie for fourth place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo. Both
teamsare now 5-3-0 in league play. The top four teams at the conclusion of the
MIAAregular season will advance to the four-team MIAA Tournament. Thursday's
gamemarked the conclusion of the first half of the MIAA's double round
robinschedule.
Calvin put together one of its finest performances of the season in
Thursday'svictory as the Knights (5-7-0 overall) outshot Kalamazoo (6-5-1)
15-4, scoringthree second half goals including two in the final 15 minutes to
seal the win.
Calvin jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of play as sophomore
PaigeRindels (Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson HS) scored on a feed from
freshmanSam Osterhaven (Caledonia/South Christian HS). Kalamazoo came back to
tie the gameon a goal by Alex Groffsky two-and-a-half minutes later, eventually
creating a1-1 halftime score.
In the second half, Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 10-1 and took a 2-1 lead on
juniorLiz Cancel's (St. Clair Shores/Fraser HS) team-leading seventh goal of
theseason on an assist from junior Francesca Smith (Bloomington,
IN/BloomingtonSouth HS). Osterhaven then broke loose for her fifth and later
sixth goals ofthe season to clinch the victory. Osterhaven gave Calvin a 3-1
lead on anunassisted rush with just over 14 minutes to play and then added
another goalin the 89th minute, putting in a shot off a pass from freshman
Haley Luurtsema(Holland/Holland Christian HS).
FreshmanLauren Merz (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) and sophomore
AshtonHearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) each played a half in goal for
theKnights with Hearn earning the win.
"This was a nice victory for our team," said Calvin women's soccercoach Mark
Recker. "It was probably the most complete game we have playedyet and we
received contributions from several of our young players. Theyreceived
value-added participation in today's game and it really paid off inthe end."
Calvin will host Trine on Saturday at noon at Zuidema Field.
WOMEN’S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK – Calvin began the first of three days of competition at
theBedford Valley Country Club Thursday afternoon, finishing fourth at the
finalMIAA Jamboree of the year with a team score of 352 strokes. The Knights
remainin fourth place in the overall MIAA standings heading into the 36-hole
MIAATournament scheduled for this weekend at Bedford Valley.
The Knights are 68 strokes ahead of Adrian for fourth place and trail
SaintMary’s by 29 strokes for third place. Hope continues to lead the
overallstandings, 15 strokes ahead of Olivet. On Thursday, Hope and Olivet tied
forfirst place with scores of 322 strokes. Saint Mary’s was third with a
teamscore of 344.
Calvin was led individually on Thursday by sophomore Carlia
Canto(Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) with a round of 79 that was good for
fourthplace individually. Junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
ChristianHS) tied for 11th with an 85 while freshman Jackie Richert
(FortGratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) had a 92, freshman Laura Richert (Fort
Gratiot/PortHuron Northern HS) a 96 and junior Rachel Whitaker (Grand
Rapids/Forest HillsNorthern HS) a 107.
Friday’s MIAA Tournament action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with
Saturday’saction slated for 9 a.m.
