"I thought Matt VanderRoest and Dan Kerr really had outstanding races today," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer after the race. "Both of those guys have really taken big steps forward. The biggest challenge for our team as a whole is to work on tightening up our pack."
On the women's side, Calvin's top runner was again senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicag Christian HS) who placed 17th with a time of 18:13. Junior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next for the Knights in 26th place (18:28) while senior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was 55th (18:58) and junior Christine Hartley (Pewaukee, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) 59th (18:59). "We've got some work to do," said Brian Diemer after the women's race. "Like the men's team, our big goal in the upcoming weeks is to tighten up our pack. We weren't able to stay together nearly as much as we would have liked and we'll need to tighten things up in the next few weeks."
A group of Calvin runners will compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational Saturday morning in Chicago.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The Calvin women's golf team began competition Thursday at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club. The Knights were able to complete nine holes of the scheduled competition before rain showers swept away the remainder of the round and cancelled the conclusion of the tournament. Whether the tournament will be completed has not yet been determined.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club at 2 p.m.
