ANGOLA, IN - Calvin suffered its first conference defeat Tuesday afternoon and the process, saw its four-game win streak come to an end. The Knights dropped a 2-0 decision to undefeated Trine (7-0-2, 3-0-1 MIAA) and fall into third place in the MIAA standings as the Knights (7-3-0 overall) are 3-1-0 in league play with Olivet (4-0-0 MIAA) now on top of the league standings after a 2-1 overtime victory over Hope Tuesday afternoon.
Calvin controlled the pace early against Trine but gave up a goal late in the first half on a shot that deflected off a Calvin defender and into the net.
Pushing for the game-tying goal early in the second half, the Knights fell behind 2-0 as an errant Calvin pass was intercepted, leading to a breakaway goal by Trine's Femi Adedji.
Shortly after the second Trine goal, the contest was delayed for 30 minutes by lightning. Much of Tuesday's game was played in a steady downpour of rain.
Trine held a 12-6 shots at goal advantage midway through the second half before the Knights came on with a final flourish, firing seven shots at goal over the final 20 minutes of play with none finding the back of the net however.
Calvin finished with a 13-12 shots at goal advantage but Trine goalkeeper Nick Thon was credited with four saves. The Trine defensive backline also cleared a shot off the goal line for a team save. Senior Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) had one save for Calvin in defeat.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, traveling to Albion for a 2:30 p.m. match.
