The Calvin men’s tennis team headed into Wednesday’s matchup with the
Kalamazoo Hornets with an undefeated MIAA conference record. They were aiming
to pull off an upset against a Kalamazoo men’s tennis program that has won 72
consecutive MIAA titles. . The Knights fell to Kalamazoo 6-3, despite taking a
2-1 lead early in the match.

The doubles matches started off well for Calvin. Roland Eldridge and Preston
Phillips were up 3-2 against Nate Eddy and Mark Denenfeld, but could not hold
the lead and fell 8-4 at the first doubles flight. The second doubles team of
Andrew DeVlieger and Phil Reinken got up an early break and held on to defeat
Steve Hanselman and Clay Bartelt 8-6. Calvin finished off the doubles by
winning at third doubles be a score of 8-4. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson
defeated Alex Dornbos and Tom Cafmeyer.

Calvin took a 2-1 lead into singles play. Unfortunately for Calvin, singles
is the huge strength of the Hornets. Nate Eddy defeated Andrew DeVlieger 6-3,
6-3 despite the Calvin senior playing well. Mark Denenfield defeated Roland
Eldridge 6-1, 6-1. Brian DeMaagd fell to Alex Dombos 6-1, 6-1. Calvin kept
themselves in the match with a win at fourth singles by Preston Phillips. He
beat Tom Cafmeyer 6-3, 7-5. The Hornets clinched that match by winning 4-6,
6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles and 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles.

“I thought we came out with fire and gave Kalamazoo a challenge right away,”
said Calvin men’s tennis coach John Ross. “We knew we had to win two or three
singles flights to have a chance to win the match because Kalamazoo’s strength
is in its singles lineup.”

The loss moves Calvin to 10-7 on the season and 2-1 in the conference. The
Knights will return to action when they face Trine on Saturday.
