Counsell & Kaufman Claim Honorable Mention All-America Honors at NCAA III
Swimming and Diving Championships;
Men's Golf Finishes Second at Sunshine Invitational;
Women's Tennis Falls to Luther College;
Baseball Weekend Series With Adrian Postponed
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
KNOXVILLE, TN - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team broke into the
team standings Friday night with a pair of honorable mention All-America
performances at the NCAA III Championships at the University of Tennessee.
Freshman Elise Kaufman (Sugarland, TX/Clements HS) took 13th (383.70) in the
women’s one-meter diving competition while sophomore Elizabeth Counsell
(Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) was 16th in the 100 breaststroke
(1:04.85). The pair of honorable mention All-America berths gives Calvin five
points in the team standings—good for 47th place with one day of competition
left.
Counsell will compete in the women’s 200 breaststroke Saturday while freshman
Andy Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home Schooled) will compete in the men’s
three-meter diving competition.
MEN'S GOLF
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - Calvin concluded competition at the Sunshine Invitational
at the Wannamaker Ryder Golf Course on Friday, finishing in second place, three
strokes behind Williams College in the two-day, 36-hole event.
Calvin held a five-stroke lead over Williams heading into Friday's competition
but the Ephs had a huge second day, firing a team score of 292 to nip the
Knights by three in the final standings. Calvin had back-to-back solid rounds
however, posting a 299 on Thursday and a 300 on Friday. The Knights were led by
senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who placed fourth
in the final team standings with a 148 (73-75) while sophomore Ben Kuiper
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for fifth with a 149 (76-73).
Senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Chrsitian HS) also came on
strong Friday, finishing in ninth place individually (78-76) with a 36-hole
total of 154.
Rounding out Calvin's finishers were freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 157 (76-81), sophomore Dave Sarkipato
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) with a 158 (82-76) and sophomore Mike
Fennema (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) with a 159 (74-85).
Jacob Wagner of Williams was the tournament medalist with a score of 146
(75-71). Trinity of Connecticut took third in the team standings with a two-day
total of 629 strokes.
The Calvin men's golf team is back in action on April 11 when it competes at
the Vic Cuiss Invitational at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Michigan.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women's tennis team suffered another close defeat to
a regionally-ranked opponent, falling 5-4 to Luther College of Iowa Friday
afternoon.
Luther took a 2-1 lead through doubles with Calvin's lone doubles point coming
from seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof at No. 1 doubles. Calvin
again swept the top three singles flights with Oosterhouse winning at No. 1
singles, Spoelhof at No. 2 singles and senior Michelle Busscher at No. 3
singles but Luther was able to grab the remaining three singles points to hold
on for the win.
Calvin (3-6) returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Kalamazoo College at
4 p.m. in the MIAA opener for both schools.
BASEBALL
The Calvin-Adrian baseball series scheduled for this Friday and Saturday has
been postponed because of cold weather conditions. Calvin was scheduled to
travel to Adrian on Friday for a doubleheader and then host the Bulldogs on
Saturday for a twinbill. The Friday doubleheader at Adrian has been rescheduled
for Monday, March 28 at 2 p.m. while Saturday’s doubleheader at Calvin has been
rescheduled for Tuesday, March 29 at 2 p.m.
