More All-America Honors For Verkaik;
Swimming & Diving Teams Prepare to Compete at NCAA III Championships;
Spring Sports Update
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Calvin College sophomore center Carissa Verkaik has received All-America honors from yet one more publication. Verkaik has been named a second team All-American by the publication Women's Division III News. It is the third All-America honor for Verkaik in the last seven days as she previously was named a first team d3hoops.com All-American and an honorable mention State Farm All-American by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
 
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik averaged 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds a game this year while leading Calvin to a 25-5 overall record. In the final NCAA III statistics released yesterday afternoon, Verkaik finished third nationally in blocked shots per-game (4.1), fifth in field goal percentage (.596) and eighth in free throw percentage (.867) while also ranking 19th in scoring average.
 
She helped Calvin as a team finish second nationally in field goal percentage defense (.306), second in blocked shots per-game (6.9), second in three-point field goal defense (.233) and fifth in scoring defense (49.2).
 
In addition, Calvin has been ranked 16th in the final USA Today/ESPN Division III Top 25 poll conducted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and 19th in the final d3hoops.com Top 25 poll of the year.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
The NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships will begin on Wednesday in Knoxville, Tennessee. Calvin will be represented by three individuals with freshman diver Andy Krafft representing the men's team while freshman diver Elise Kaufman and sophomore swimmer Elizabeth Counsell will represent the women's team. Counsell will compete in the 200 IM and in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

On Wednesday, Counsell will compete in the 200 IM trials while Kaufman will compete in the women's three-meter diving trials. On Thursday, Krafft will compete in the men's one-meter diving trials. On Friday, Counsell will compete in the women's 100 breaststroke trials while Kaufman will compete in the women's one-meter diving trials.
 
On Saturday, Counsell will compete in the women's 200 breaststroke trials while Krafft will compete in the men's three-meter diving trials.

CALVIN SPRING SPORTS UPDATE
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
 
The Calvin women's tennis team is 3-3 overall and 2-0 on its spring trip to Orlando, Florida. On Monday, the Knights defeated George Fox 5-4 and Huntingdon College 6-3. In the win over George Fox, singles were played first with doubles played last. After singles play, the match was tied 3-3 but the Knights took two of the three doubles points with seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof winning at No. 1 doubles and freshmen Bethany Zoerhof and Lauren Schlagenhauf providing the clinching point with a win at No. 3 doubles.
 
In the win over Huntingdon, ranked 12th in the South Region, Oosterhouse, Spoelhof, senior Michelle Busscher and sophomore Elise Doezema picked up singles victories while Oosterhouse and Spoelhof were winners at No. 1 doubles and Busscher and Doezema winners at No. 2 doubles. Calvin was off on Tuesday but is scheduled to face St. Olaf on Wednesday at noon.

MEN'S TENNIS
 
The Calvin men's tennis team is 3-2 overall and 1-1 thus far on its spring trip to Orlando, Florida. On Monday, Calvin suffered a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Hamline University but rebounded to defeat North Central College 9-0 Tuesday afternoon.
 
In the loss to Hamline, Calvin fell behind 2-1 after doubles player with Calvin's lone doubles point coming from senior Roland Eldridge and sophomore Preston Phillips at No. 1 doubles. Calvin was able to muster only a three-point split in singles play with senior Andrew DeVlieger winning at No. 2 singles, Phillips winning at No. 4 singles and sophomore Philip Reinken winning at No. 6 singles.
 
In Calvin's win over North Central, Calvin received singles victories from Eldridge, DeVlieger, DeMaagd, Phillips, sophomore Jarrod Brower and Reinken. Eldridge and Phillips were winners at No. 1 doubles, DeMaagd and freshman Loukas Peterson winners at No. 2 doubles and DeVlieger and Reinken winners at No. 3 doubles.
 
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday, taking on Colorado College at noon.

BASEBALL
 
TUCSON, AZ - Heading into today, the Calvin baseball team was 3-2 on its spring trip and 3-4 overall. After opening with a double-header sweep over Norwich and a win over Buena Vista last weekend, the Knights stumbled on Monday, falling to Hamline 14-4 and to Buena Vista 11-4.
 
In the loss to Buena Vista Monday, Calvin held a 4-3 lead late in the contest but Buena Vista mounted an eight-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away. Junior Joe Lambers took the loss, going 7.1 innings while striking out seven and walking two. Senior Andrew Bosma had a pair of hits but Calvin stranded 18 baserunners in the game.
 
The Knights were scheduled to play late this afternoon in a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Superior. Details of the twinbill were not available Tuesday night. Calvin is scheduled to return home Wednesday and is scheduled to open its MIAA campaign on Friday at Adrian in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
 
SOFTBALL
 
TUCSON, AZ - After opening the season with a 12-6 win over St. Olaf, Calvin has struggled, dropping five consecutive games including an 11-0 decision to Hastings College and a 17-0 decision to Pacific College (OR) Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 11-0 and to Lewis and Clark 9-1. The Knights are now 1-5 on the year and return to action on Wednesday, facing McPherson College and St. Olaf College in morning contests.
