SOFTBALL - 2011 PREVIEW
The 2011 Calvin softball team will look to improve upon a 2010 season that saw
the Knights finish 11-24 overall and tied for sixth place in the final MIAA
standings with a 6-10 conference mark. Of Calvin’s six league victories, two
were against teams near the top of the league standings as the Knights upset
third-place Trine and second place Adrian during the conference campaign while
losing a narrow 4-3 decision to conference champion Alma.
A large part of Calvin’s 2010 success was due to the pitching of Shelby Mast
(Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) who fashioned a 10-18 record along with an
impressive 2.42 earned run average - en route to receiving All-MIAA second team
honors.
Mast is one of eight returning letterwinners including seniors Heather
Sanderson (Rockford/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville,
ON/Smithville District Christian HS), junior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian HS) and sophomores Bekah Kline (Rochester, MI/Oakland Christian HS),
Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS), Hannah DeWeerd (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Ashley Oosterink (Wyoming/Calvin Christian
HS) and Mast.
Prins led Calvin at the plate last spring, batting .380 with a team-leading 21
RBI’s.
VanRooyen was close behind with a .379 batting average last spring while
belting a pair of homers and driving in 12 runs along with three stolen bases.
She also played solid centerfield, committing just one error in 29 chances.
DeWeerd also provided power with a team-leading three home runs while manning
leftfield. Kline, Spoelstra and Sanderson all saw time in the outfield last
spring as well.
The Knights also welcome six freshmen to the team this spring including
pitchers Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) and Danae Miedema
(Jenison, MI/Covenant Christian HS) which should provide for more pitching
depth for the Knights this spring. A year ago, Mast tossed 184.1 of a possible
215.1 innings.
Calvin will open its season this Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. The Knights will
St. Olaf (MN) and Otterbein (OH) in single games on Saturday. While in Arizona,
the Knights will play in 10 games and will return home to face Trinity
Christian College in a non-conference double-header at at home on March 28 at
3:30 p.m.
Calvin will open its MIAA campaign on April 5, traveling to Kalamazoo College
for a twinbill.
