DANVILLE. KY - The Calvin baseball team traveled south for its first competition of the year and dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Centre College Friday night, falling 4-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

Game one featured a pitcher's duel between Calvin's Keith Spoelstra and Centre's Joe Nash. The two pitcher traded shutout ball through four innings before the host Colonels were able to push across three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Calvin countered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as senior Peter Steiner delivered a two-run RBI double that plated sophomores Mike Fuller and Ben Cok. Centre added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. In the seventh, Calvin placed two runners on base with one out but could not deliver the tying runs as Centre reliever Adam Hoyt gained back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Spoelstra (0-1) took the loss, striking out four and walking two. Nash picked up the win, striking out eight and walking two. Calvin had five hits in the loss with Steiner going 2-for-3 with both of his hits doubles.

Steiner then took the mound for game two. Steiner went five innings and gave up just three runs - all of which came in the second inning after Calvin had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo homerun by junior Scott Tipton. Calvin managed just four hits against Centre starter Ben Lause who went the distance to gain the win for the Colonels. Lause struck out seven Calvin batters and walked just three. Sophomore Tyler Tos had one of Calvin's four hits, delivering a double. Steiner (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Knights, striking out one and walking two.

Calvin was scheduled to face Centre College today at 4:30 p.m. but the game has been cancelled because of thunderstorm that swept through Danville, Kentucky.

Calvin will now prepare for its spring trip to Tucson, Arizona. The trip will begin on March 18 when the Knights take on Norwich College in a doubleheader.
