Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Capture MIAA Indoor Invitational Titles;
NCAA III Women's Basketball Pairings to Be Announced Monday Afternoon
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams captured the MIAA Indoor Invitational titles on Saturday at Trine University. On the women's side, Calvin took first place with 226.16 points with Hope second with 121.83 points. On the men's side, Calvin posted a first place score of 188.5 points, just over 50 points ahead of second place Adrian (135.25).
 
Highlights for the Calvin women's team included:
 
*An NCAA III automatic and season-best throw of 46-1 1/2 by senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put that was good for first place. The throw places Reasoner in fourth place on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field shot put performance list.
 
*Double victories by senior Rachel Boerner who won the 60 meter dash (7.91) and 200 meters (26.07) while also running a leg on Calvin's winning 4x400 meter relay team (4:03.57).
 
*Senior Rebekah VanDyk winning the high jump (5-1 3/4).
 
*Senior Samantha Westveer winning the 5,000 meters (18:16.03.
 
*Junior Kaitlin Diemer winning the mile run (5:15.11).
 
*Junior Kelly Peterson winning the triple jump (35-6).
 
*Senior Kim Wigboldy winning the long jump (16-10).
 
*Senior Gretchen Braymer winning the 3,000 meters (10:35.68).
 
*Junior Lindsey VanderBrug in her first year on the team taking second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.61).
 
*Freshman Olivia Butler taking secondin the 800 meters (2:20.38).
 
*Freshman Julie Busscher taking third in the 200 meters (26.99) and 60 meter dash (8.13).
 
*Sophomore Jen Silvestro taking third in the shot put (37-6 1/2).
 
*Senior Leigha Oberle taking fourth in the weight throw (45-5 1/4).
 
*Calvin also winning distance medley relay (13:06) and 800 meter relay (1:50.96).
 
Highlights for the Calvin men's team included:
 
*Sophomore Aaron Meckes winning the shot put with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 51-11 1/4.
 
*Calvin sweeping the top three spots in the mile run with all three individuals posting NCAA III provisional qualifying times. The sweep included a first place performance by senior Alex Wrobel (4:14.69), a second place finish by sophomore Greg Whittle (4:15.54) and a third place finish by junior Nick Kramer (4:15.57).
 
*Calvin also went 1-2 in the 800 meters with junior Carson Sterchi winning with a time of 1:58.82 while senior Ben Dykema was second (1:58.98).
 
*In the 3,000 meters, Calvin swept the top four spots led by freshman Sam Kerk in first (8:57.24), sophomore Alex VanHaitsma in second (9:00.17), sophomore Kevin Peterson in third (9:01.10) and sophomore Job Christiansen in fourth (9:01.59).
 
*In the men's 5,000 meters, senior Jake Christiansen was a winner ina time of 15:26.61.
 
*Sophomore Kyle Jasperse also had a big day, winning the long jump (21-5 1/2) and triple jump (43-9 3/4) while freshman Ryan Huffman was second in the long jump (21-3 1/2) and sophomore Russell Kamps third in the triple jump (42-0 3/4).
 
*In the high jump, freshman Matt Christians had a solid performance, placing third with a jump of 6-5 1/2.
 
*Calvin's distance medley relay team also took first place in a time of 10:37.36.
 
A group of Calvin athletes will compete on March 5, at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Invitational.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
As winners of the MIAA Tournament yesterday, the Calvin women's basketball team will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament set to open next Friday. The NCAA III Tournament field will be announced on Monday at 3 p.m. (EST) and will be unveiled using a live video selection show. The selection show can be viewed on the NCAA website on Monday at: http://www.ncaa.com.
 
Calvin will be making its 12th appearance in the NCAA III Tournament including their fifth under current head coach John Ross. The Knights are 14-12 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play and have reached the national quarterfinals twice - doing so in 2005 and 2007.
