By Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot
Calvin advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAA tournament play with a
72-65 victory over Trine on Wednesday night.
The Knights fell down 7-0 to start the game, but sophomore Tom Snikkers
rattled off six consecutive points to cut the deficit to one. Trine, however,
would open up an 11 point lead on multiple first half occasions, once of a
three from the Thunder’s most dangerous offensive threat, Ian Jackson. The
three gave the Thunder an 11 point lead with five minutes to play in the
opening half.
From there, Calvin would storm back as senior Trent Salo and junior Brian
Haverdink combined to down three triples, and Calvin established a five point
lead at the half as the Knights outscored the Thunder 16-0 over the final five
minutes.
“We were strong in the last four or five minutes from a mentality standpoint,”
said Coach Kevin Vande Streek, who described the change in mentality as a shift
“from being passive to being the aggressor.”
Calvin controlled the lead throughout the second half, but the Thunder
repeatedly crawled back to bring themselves within five.
Trine even cut the lead to four after two straight three-pointers from Noah
Veach and Randall Harris. Snikkers was able to answer for the Knights however,
connecting on a baseline jumper. From there, the Knights went 9-10 from the
free-throw line to seal the victory.
Snikkers led the Knights with 18 points. Senior Danny Rodts added 13 points
and led the Knights 9 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Brink chipped in 15 points and
Haverdink notched nine points.Scott Rogers led Trine with 17 points.
Calvin will face Albion at 6 p.m. in Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse in a semifinal
game with host Hope taking on Adrian at 8:15 p.m. in the second semifinal.
