Women's Basketball Gains Share of Final MIAA Regular Season Title - Gains Top
Seed for League Tournament - Verkaik Hits 1,000 Point Plateau
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 64, Trine 35
ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin women’s basketball team captured a share of its first
MIAA title since the 2006-07 season with a 64-35 win at Trine University.
Calvin (21-4 overall) finishes the MIAA at 15-1 and shares the final league
title with Hope which also finished league play with a 15-1 conference mark.
In its win over Trine, Calvin sophomore Carissa Verkaik became the 13th player
in Calvin women’s basketball history to hit the 1,000 point plateau as she
scored 18 points to hit 1,000 points on the nose. Junior Courtney Kurncz also
had a strong game for Calvin with 15 points.
Late Saturday afternoon, Calvin won a coin flip with Hope for the top seed for
next week’s MIAA Tournament. As the top seed, Calvin will have homecourt
advantage throughout the league tournament. The Knights will host Kalamazoo in
a first round MIAA Tournament game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 51, Albion 45
ALBION - The Calvin men’s basketball team used a strong final surge to defeat
Alboion 51-45 Saturday afternoon at Kresge Gymnasium.
With the win, Calvin (14-11 overall) finishes in sole possession of second
place in the final MIAA regular season standings at 9-5 in league play. Calvin
also gains the second seed for the MIAA Tournament next week and will host
Trine in a first round game next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Trailing 45-44 with just under five minutes left to play on Saturday, Calvin
scored the final seven points sparked by a three-pointer by senior Brent
Schuster that put the Knights ahead to stay. Seniors Trent Salo and Danny Rodts
followed with clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Sophomore Tom Snikkers finished the game with 16 points while Schuster had
10.
Calvin trailed 28-26 at halftime but held Albion to four second half field
goals.
