CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEB. 9, 2012

Women's Basketball Defeats Olivet;
Men's Basketball Clipped by Adrian

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 67, Olivet 40

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Calvin put the hammer down in the second half
to roll to a 67-40 victory at Olivet Wednesday night. Calvin (19-4 overall,
13-1 MIAA) held Olivet without a field goal for the first eight-and-a-half
minutes of the second half to pull away from the host Comets.

Calvin led 31-23 at halftime but used a 15-3 run to open the second half to
build a 46-26 second half lead.

Olivet played Calvin even terms for most of the first half as the teams were
tied 23-23 with 3:40 left in the first half. Calvin then scored the final eight
points of the second half and kept the momentum rolling in the second half to
pull away for the win.

"I want to give a lot of credit to Olivet for the way they played in the first
half," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "They ran their offense
the way they wanted to and had us off-balance. We had a nice finish to the half
though and then we really bumped up our intensity in the second half which was
great to see."

Calvin was led by sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS)
with 18 points and 11 rebounds as she notched her 22nd collegiate double-double
including her 11th double-double of the season. Sophomore Logan Marsh (Byron
Center/Byron Center HS) also had a strong game with 10 points including a pair
of three-point baskets to go with two assists and two steals. Sophomore Ally
Wolffis (Muskegon/Mona Shores HS) had 10 points and five rebounds while
sophomore Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had eight
points and six boards off the bench. Junior guard Jill Thomas (Grand
Rapids/West Catholic HS) added five points and a game-high five assists.

Calvin shot 44.8 percent overall and held Olivet to 28.3 percent field goal
shooting including 20.7 percent in the second half. Tiffany Thelen led Olivet
in scoring with 12 points.

Calvin will now break for a week and will return to action next Wednesday when
it hosts Alma at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

The Knights fell short in their second consecutive conference game, falling to
Adrian 75-63 Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.

Against the MIAA’s best defensive squad, Calvin shot 35.7% from the field,
coupled with a meager 6-20 effort from beyond the 3-point arc.

Adrian, on the other hand, was on fire. The Bulldogs made 27 of their 50
field goal attempts and shot a lightning hot 57% from the parabola.

Calvin was able to get in the lane in the first half, but struggled to connect
and finish. Towards the end of the first half, Cody Barnes increased Adrian’s
lead to seven with a three-ball. Calvin was unable to finish on a string of a
lay-ups and Delano Collins converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give
Adrian a 10 point lead going into the break.

Tom Snikkers opened the second half with a lay-up for the Knights, but Adrian
was able to string together six consecutive points, taking a 14 point lead.

This trend continued for the duration of the game. Every time Calvin was able
to claw into the Bulldog lead, Adrian knocked down a three, quelling all hopes
of a Calvin comeback.
The Knights cut the deficit to single digits late in the game, but Adrian held
on to a 75-63 victory.

Snikkers lead the Knights with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Four players scored
13 points or more for the Bulldogs.

Coach Kevin Vande Streek noted Calvin’s inability to convert a handful of
first half possessions into points and failure to defend a full shot clock in
the second half. “Adrian is an outstanding defensive team. My hat’s off to
them,” he said.

Calvin (11-11 overall) is now locked in a five-way tie for second place with
Adrian, Albion, Kalamazoo and Olivet for second place in the MIAA standings.
All five teams are 6-5 in league play. Hope (10-1 MIAA) clinched the outright
MIAA title on Wednesday with a 65-60 win over Olivet.

Calvin will host Alma on Saturday at 3 p.m.
