Carissa Verkaik Named to Capital One Academic All-District IV Second Team in Women's Basketball
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College sophomore Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV second team in women's basketball in the college division as voted upon by the College Sports Information Director's Association (CoSIDA). Capital One recently became the new sponsor of CoSIDA's Academic All-America program.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik carries a 3.51 grade point average while majoring in elementary education.
As a sophomore center this year, Verkaik is averaging 18.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots per game. She is also connecting on 57.2 percent of her field goal attempts and 84.6 percent of her throw tries.
She is currently ranked fifth nationally in blocks-per-game. Verkaik also has 21 career double-doubles including 10 this year.
A year ago, she was named to the All-MIAA first team and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. She was also later named to the d3hoops.com All-America third team and was named the d3hoops.com National Freshman of the Year.
Verkaik has also found time to be a two-sport athlete at Calvin. Last spring, she was a member of the Calvin women's track and field team and placed fourth in the high jump at the MIAA Track and Field Championships.
The Calvin women's basketball team is currently 18-3 overall and in first place in the MIAA standings with a 12-0 conference record. The Knights are currently ranked 20th by both d3hoops.com Top 25 poll and by the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Top 25 poll.
