By Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot

Calvin rolled to a 74-60 victory over MIAA foe St. Mary’s on Saturday. The
Knights jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes after a Logan Marsh
fast break lay-up began the scoring.

“We got off to an early start. That really helped us out,” said Coach John
Ross.

Calvin led by as much as 20 in the first half, thanks largely to sophomore
Julia Hilbrand’s scoring input. Hilbrands recorded nine points in the first
half. The Knights led 39-25 at half time.
Calvin opened the second half strong, establishing a 22 point lead in the
opening three minutes.

“A start like that is an energy and momentum boost,” commented Ross.

The Calvin frontcourt continued to dominate in the second half. Calvin
finished the game with 24 points in the paint. Sophomore Carissa Verkaik led
the Knights with 20 points and 12 rebounds to notch her 21st collegiate
double-double. Hilbrands tallied a career high 19 points. Sophomore Ally
Wolffis also notched 14 points and six rebounds.

“We kept going inside and got some good lay-ups,” said Coach Ross, who noted
that he would like to see more scoring balance but “a lot of people made great
passes into the post.”

The victory keeps Calvin’s conference record unblemished at 9-0 and improves
Calvin overall to 15-3.

The Knights travel to Albion on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Calvin improved its conference record to 4-2 with a 74-68 victory over Trine
on Saturday.

The game opened slowly, with only eight total points in the opening four
minutes. Calvin (9-8 overall) also turned the ball over three times by the
sixteen minute mark. The Knights and Thunder remained neck and neck throughout
the first portion of the half. Trine sophomore Neil Smith knocked down a three
at 12:36 to give the Thunder a two point advantage, but Calvin freshman Jordan
Brink responded with a three of his own to give the Knights a slim lead.

Shortly after that, freshman Tyler Kruis tied the game at 14 with another
lay-up. From there, Calvin would go on a 29-9 run to end the half on top
31-22.

But Trine came out of halftime strong. Sophomore Ian Jackson scored six
points in the opening four minutes to cut the deficit to two. That’s when
sophomore Ty Graham banked in a floater to tie the game at 37.

Trine would advance the lead to three points off a Scott Rogers lay-up.
Senior Danny Rodts came up big for Calvin though, with a clutch three-pointer
to tie the game with 13 minutes remaining. Rodts then assisted fellow senior
Trent Salo on a triple to put the Knights on top by three.

Senior Brent Schuster poured in four consecutive points and sophomore Bryan
Powell hit a big three to increase Calvin’s lead to seven points.

“We didn’t start the second half well, but we recovered when the game got
tight,” said Coach Kevin Vande Sreek.

Calvin owned the lead from that point on. Trine would cut the margin to four
points late in the game but the Knights connected on late free-throws, sealing
the victory.
Vande Streek was pleased with the team defensive effort, holding the MIAA’s
best scoring offense to 68 points.

“Our length was effective. We’re starting to catch on defensively,” he
commented.

Calvin was led in scoring by Rodts with 19 points while Brink had 12 and Tom
Snikkers 10. Ian Jackson led Trine with 22 points.

The Knights host Albion on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Kalamazoo Men 191, Calvin Men 106

The Calvin women's swimming and diving team defeated MIAA foe Kalamazoo
155-140 at the Venema Aquatic Center in dual meet action while the Calvin men's
team was defeated by Kalamazoo 191-106. The Kalamazoo women entered Saturday's
meet ranked 17th nationally but the Calvin women's team used depth in its
lineup and decisive 1-2-3 sweeps in both the one and three-meter diving
competitions to gain the win. The Calvin women's team is now 4-3 overall
including 4-0 against MIAA teams. On the men's side, the Knights were defeated
by sixth-ranked Kalamazoo. The Calvin men are now 2-4 in dual competition this
year including 1-3 against MIAA opponents.

In the women's meet, Kalamazoo took first place in 10 of a possible 14
swimming events including both relays but the Knights hung tough with four
first place finishes in the swim events and quality depth throughout its
lineup. Calvin's diving contingent of senior Carmen Brummel (West Olive/Unity
Christian HS), sophomore Sam Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and
freshman Elise Kaufman (Sugarland, TX/Clements HS) also played a crucial role
in the win. Klaasen won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 253.05
with Kauffman second (246.15) and Brummel third (224.35) while Kaufman won the
three-meter competition with a score of 271.05 while Klaasen was second
(253.95) and Brummel third (212.35).

Sophomore Shelby Cloyd (Kalamazoo/Plainwell HS) led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in
the 1,000 freestyle with a first place and season-best time of 10:58.15 while
junior Bridgett Scott (Oakville, ON/Kings Christian Collegiate Academy) was
second (11:12.03) and freshman Claire Strunk (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township
HS) third (11:16.22).

Other first place finishes for the Calvin women included senior Monica
Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS) in the 100 backstroke (1:01.61), sophomore
Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA/Home Schooled) in the 100 freestyle (54.86)
and junior Briana Seaks (East Lansing, IL/Okemos HS) in the 200 backstroke
(2:17.71).

On the men's side, Calvin had several notable performances led by the
double-victory performance of freshman Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN/Home
Schooled) who won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 310.45 and
the three-meter board with a season-best and NCAA III qualifying score of
296.70. The three-meter score by Kraff was less than two points shy of breaking
the school record of 298.50 set by Bill VanEe in 1985.

In addition, sophomore Mathias Bares (Holland/West Ottawa HS) had a superb
effort in the 1,000 freestyle, winning in a time of 10:19.86. Sophomore Greg
Gorham (Minneapolis, MN/Richfield HS) won the 100 breaststroke in a time of
1:01.01 while freshman Peter Johnson (Oak Forest, IL/Home Schooled) won the 200
butterfly (2:01.15).
