The Knights continued to roll in the MIAA, with another three set victory over
Kalamazoo on Friday night.
In the first set, Calvin couldn’t pull ahead of the Hornets, and even trailed
for much of the early portions of the set. Kalamazoo went up 16-15 before
Coach Amber Warners called a timeout to collect her team. The Knights rattled
off four consecutive points and took what looked to be a commanding lead, but
Kalamazoo came back to tie the game at 20. Calvin then opened a lead and
finished the set with a 25-21 victory.
Calvin came out strong in the second set. Sophomore Jen Pluymert went on a
serving run, giving the Knights a 12-6 lead before surrendering the serve.
Kalamazoo cut the deficit to 13-10 but the Knights finished the set off with a
25-14 victory.
Calvin opened the final set with some big attacks from their middle hitters.
Juniors Renee DeHaan and Rebecca Kamp had big kills up the middle to give
Calvin an early lead. Calvin didn’t look back from there, taking the final set
25-17 off of an Erin VanderPlas attack.
Statistically, DeHaan led the Knights with 12 kills. Freshman Megan Rietema
had 31 Calvin’s 35 assists on the night. Rebecca Kamp played a role in 5
blocks and Kelly Peterson had 7 digs in the back row.
“I thought our passes were really good tonight. Our defense played well,”
said Warners.
Calvin closes out the regular season by hosting Alma tomorrow night. On that
match-up, Warners said, “One of our goals is to win the league. To do that
we’ll have to play well tomorrow.”
