Women's Soccer Shuts Out Aquinas in Season Opener;
Canto Fires School Record Round of 77 in Dual Match With Aquinas
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Aquinas 0
Calvin opened its 2010 campaign with a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Aquinas Wednesday afternoon at Calvin's Zuidema Field. The Knights have now won four straight games against Aquinas.
Freshman Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) provided the only goal of the game, scoring in the eighth minute off play off a corner kick from senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS). Calvin had several chances to widen the gap but Aquinas goalkeeper had a stellar game in net, collecting nine saves including five in the first half when the Knights threatened to blow the game open early.
Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) also had a strong debut, recording two saves in posting her first collegiate shutout.
Calvin held a 22-5 shots at goal advantage with sophomore Jillian Honderd (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) leading the offensive attack with six shots at goal.
Ranked 15th nationally, Calvin will now travel this weekend to face second-ranked Washington University on Friday and Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday. Both games will be played on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
WOMEN'S GOLF
COMSTOCK PARK - Led by a school record match score of 77 by freshman Carlia Canto (Marysville, IN/Port Huron Northern HS), Calvin posted a solid team score of 378 in a dual match with Aquinas Wednesday afternoon at the Scott Lake Golf Club. Aquinas finished 15 strokes ahead of Calvin to win the non-conference match.
Canto's round of 77 was also good for medalist honors on Wednesday.
Sophmore Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong day with a round of 91. Freshman Taylor McClaskie (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby HS) was next with a round of 99 followed by freshman Ashley Tiefenthal (Manistee, MI/Manistee HS) with a 111 and Melissa Shepard (Lowell, MI/Lowell HS) with a 112.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action next Tuesday when it competes at the Hope Invitational at the Macatawa Legends Golf Club beginning at 2 p.m.
