Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler Named ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-Americans
Calvin College juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in the women's college at-large
division as selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association
of America. Oosterhouse has been named to the first team while Bressler has
been named to the third team.
The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of
bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse,
skiing, tennis and water polo.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Oosterhouse has been a three-year member of the Calvin women's tennis program.
She is the first individual in Calvin women's tennis history to receive ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-America accolades.
During the 2009-10 season, Oosterhouse compiled a singles record of 25-2
including 23-0 in dual match play. Last month, Oosterhouse was named to the
All-MIAA first team for a third straight year and was also voted the MIAA’s
Most Valuable Player. She was also named the recipient of the Sue Little
Sportsmanship Award in 2009.
Her efforts this spring helped the Calvin women’s tennis team capture its
first MIAA title since 1982 as the Knights finished 19-4 overall and 8-0 in
league play, establishing a new Calvin single-season record for victories in
the process. Calvin also captured its first MIAA Tournament title since 1982,
defeating Alma, Albion and Hope in the tournament to gain its first-ever bid to
the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin defeated Baldwin-Wallace 5-0 in a first round
NCAA III Tournament match last week and then fell 5-2 to nationally-ranked
Washington University 5-2 in the second round. Oosterhouse picked up singles
victories in both NCAA III Tournament matches.
She later became the first player in Calvin women's tennis history to receive
a bid to the NCAA III Singles Tournament. Oosterhouse competed in the
tournament on May 28, falling to defending national singles champion Lorne
McManigle 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Prior to the start of the tournament,
Oosterhouse was named the recipient of the NCAA III Elite 88 Award - given to
the athlete competing at the championship event with the highest cumulative
grade point average.
In the classroom, Oosterhouse is a biology major with minors in chemistry and
Spanish. She carries a 3.92 grade point average and has been a regular member
of the Calvin Dean’s List and MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
A three-year member of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team, Bressler
is from Sandusky, Ohio. She is a graduate of Perkins High School. A two-time
All-MIAA selection, Bressler has been a part of three MIAA championship teams.
At the MIAA Championships this past February, she captured league titles in
the 50 freestyle (23.76), 100 backstroke (58.34) and 200 backstroke (2:09.94).
She also qualified for the NCAA III Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke
events and in several relays.
She was also a national qualifier for the 2009 NCAA III Championships and
picked up All-America honors twice as she was a member of Calvin’s eighth place
200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. She has also been a member of three
honorable mention All-America relay teams at Calvin, placing 10th in the 200
medley relay at the 2009 national meet and 12th in 200 medley relay and 16th in
the 400 medley relay at the 2010 national meet.
She has also helped the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team capture three
MIAA titles and finish seventh at the 2009 NCAA III Championships and 24th at
the 2010 NCAA III Championships.
An accounting major, Bressler carries a 3.79 grade point average. She is a
five-time member of the Calvin Dean’s List and a two-time member of the MIAA
Academic Honor Roll.
Calvin has now had five individuals receive ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America accolades during the 2009-10 academic year as Rebecca Kamp
(volleyball) was named to the first team, Greg Snapper (men's soccer) named to
the second team and Allison Boender (women's soccer) named to the third team
this fall.
With Bressler a swimmer and Oosterhouse a tennis player, Calvin has also had
an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in each of its three sports seasons
(fall, winter and spring) this year.
Calvin has now had its athletes receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
accolades 85 times including 54 times in the last 12 years.
