Melissa Oosterhouse Bows Out in First Round of NCAA III Singles Tournament
WOMEN'S TENNIS
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The NCAA III Singles Tournament run for Calvin College senior Melissa Oosterhouse came to an end in the first round Friday morning as she was defeated by Lorne McManigle 6-4, 6-2. McManigle entered the tournament as the defending NCAA III singles champion, having won the individual crown at the 2009 NCAA III Singles Tournament.
Oosterhouse was making her first appearance in the NCAA III Singles Tournament but despite the fact, battled gamely against a staunch opponent.
"Melissa did a great job today against a tremendous player and a defending national champion," said Calvin women's tennis coach Jerry Bergsma. "Melissa had a very difficult first round draw but she showed she belongs at this level."
Oosterhouse concludes her 2009-10 campaign with a 25-2 singles record. She is the first Calvin women's tennis player to hit the 20-win plateau and reach the NCAA III Singles Tournament. On Thursday night, she also received the NCAA's Elite 88 Award - becoming the first athlete in Calvin history to be so honored.
