WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse has added yet another award to her
growing mantle of awards. On Monday, Oosterhouse was named the Division III
Central Region Player to Watch by the International Tennis Association.
The award is open to players who are second or third year players
participating in NCAA Division III singles or doubles. The player's school must
be a current ITA member, and the player should have had an outstanding
collegiate year but has not yet reached the finals of an ITA National event or
has not won an ITA Regional Championship event. Another requirement is that the
player upholds and demonstrates the highest standards of sportsmanship.
Oosterhouse fits all of the above criteria and was nominated by Calvin women's
tennis coach Jerry Bergsma.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Oosterhouse will compete in her first-ever NCAA III Singles Tournament this
weekend at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Oosterhouse will carry an overall season record of 25-1 in singles into the
tournament. In dual match play this spring, Oosterhouse was 23-0, becoming the
first individual in Calvin women's tennis history to reach the 20-win plateau.
Oosterhouse was also named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and named to the
All-MIAA first team for a third straight year. In 2009, she was named the
recipient of the Sue Little Sportsmanship Award.
Last week she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first
team in the women's college at-large division for the second straight year. She
is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
Oosterhouse will begin play in the NCAA III Singles Tournament this Friday
morning.
