Grand Rapids –Calvin’s men’s tennis team took on the Albion Britons on Tuesday
afternoon in search of a 3rd place finish in the MIAA. The Knights defeated
the Britons 6-3 to clinch the third seed in this weekend’s MIAA tournament and
an opening round matchup with the Alma Scots.

Third doubles were the first flight off of the court. Dave and Blake Tucker
beat sophomore Jon Goorhouse (Holland Christian) and junior Andrew DeVlieger
(Northpointe Christian) 8-5 to give the Britons a 1-0 lead. Calvin leveled the
score at one. The second doubles team of Andrew Rescorla and Brian DeMaagd
(Calvin Christian) beat Brent Parshall and Johnny Vinson 8-4. First doubles
was a tight match the whole way, but Calvin prevailed 8-6. Preston Phillips
and Roland Eldridge defeated Ben Miller and Danny Frank.

“Both Roland and I have steady serves. We look to break early and hold onto
that break. We needed a better return of serve in this match,” freshmen
Preston Phillips said after the match.

Entering singles play, Calvin needed three of the five singles matches to
clinch. Preston Phillips was the first off the court defeating Brent Parshall
winning the third singles flight 6-3, 6-2. Albion won the first singles flight
next as Ben Miller defeated Andrew DeVlieger 6-1, 6-2. Calvin won at fifth
singles 6-1, 7-6(2) as Brian DeMaagd beat Johnny Vinson. Albion answered again
winning 6th singles as Chris Tapping defeated Phil Reinkin 6-4, 6-4.

There were two matches left on court, and Calvin needed one of the two to
clinch the match. Calvin’s lone senior Andrew Rescorla defeated Tucker Blake
6-4, 7-5 at fourth singles in his last match at Strikwerda tennis center.
Roland Eldridge defeated Danny Frank at second singles 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.

“I was disappointed that we did not come out with much energy in the doubles
matches. This could be attributed to the academic advising break. It wasn’t
pretty, but we got it done,” said Calvin head men’s tennis coach John Ross.

Calvin will play Alma on Friday in the first round of the MIAA Tournament at
Kalamazoo College.
