Women's Tennis Remains Unbeaten in MIAA With Win Over Saint Mary's;
Men's Golf Takes Fourth at Furniture City Classic;
Softball Doubleheader With Hope Postponed Until Monday
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
 
SOUTH BEND, IN - The Calvin women's tennis team remained unbeaten in MIAA competition and improved to 11-2 on the season with a 6-3 victory at Saint Mary's Wednesday afternoon. Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Regional rankings, Calvin is now 4-0 in league play while Saint Mary's is 8-4 overall and 2-1 in MIAA competition.
 
Calvin took an early lead with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles with juniors Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) teaming up for a win at No. 1 doubles and seniors Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) winning at No. 3 doubles.
 
Calvin then took four of the six singles flights with Oosterhouse winning 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Geenen winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
 
Oosterhouse is now 15-1 in singles play while Geenen is 12-3, Strikwerda 11-2 and Busscher 9-4. The odubles tandem of Spoelhof and Oosterhouse is now 10-4 while the DeGroot/Geenen tandem is 12-1.
 
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 1 p.m. in a conference match.

KENTWOOD -- Playing through steady rain showers, the Calvin men's golf team had a solid showing at the Furniture City Classic on Wednesday at the Stonewater Country Club, posting a fourth place (36-hole) score of 618 strokes, one stroke behind Grand Rapids Community College and one stroke ahead of fifth place Hope. Cornerstone took first place with a score of 598 with Davenport second (607) and Aquinas sixth (626).
 
Calvin was led by junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who took sixth place individually with a score of 150 (76-74). Sophomore Jake DeBoer (South Christian HS) also had a strong day, placing 12th with a score of 153 (78-75). Freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 19th (76-81) with a score of 157 and freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo Christian HS) 24th with a score of 158 (78-80). Freshman Mike Fennema (South Christian HS) also contributed a score of 168 (86-82) that was good for 34th place.
 
Senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids Christian HS) did not play on Wednesday as he will compete in a weekend tournament hosted by Capital University.
 
Steve Strock of Hope was the tournament medalist with a score of 141 (74-67).
 
Calvin is back in action on April 17 when it competes at the Bill Gettig Invitational at the Zollner Golf Club on the campus of Trine University.
 
SOFTBALL
 
Calvin's Wednesday doubleheader with Hope was washed away by rain. The twinbill has been rescheduled for Monday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
