Men's Tennis Falls to Grand Valley State For First Loss of Year

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Casey Herman is an NCAA III All-Amercian on the one-meter diving board. A native of Libertyville, Illinois, Herman placed seventh on the one-meter board Thursday night at the NCAA III Championships with a score of 396.15 points. A year ago, Herman placed eighth on the one-meter board to earn All-America accolades. Herman joins Sari Brummel (Class of 1987) and Erica Deur (Class of 2009) as the only multiple All-America divers in Calvin women's swimming and diving history.

Herman was one of two All-America divers from the MIAA on Thursday night as Hannah Leetsma of Alma took eighth with a score of 393.80. Calvin senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) also competed on the one-meter board in the afternoon prelims but did not advance to the finals, placing 19th with a score of 350.10.

"I'm really proud of Casey and Joy tonight," said Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "This is Casey's third trip to the national meet and tonight was her highest finish. She dove like a experienced veteran, particularly in the prelims. Having a teammate here in Joy was also beneficial for Casey. Joy is a very supportive teammate and she helped make Casey feel more comfortable. I also thought Joy had a very solid showing in her first-ever national competition. She has nothing to be ashamed of and should be proud of her performance tonight."

The Calvin women's 400 medley relay team of junior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH), senior Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), junior Caitlin Alexander (Holland Christian HS) and senior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) also grabbed an honorable mention All-America berth by placing 16th with a time of 3:55.73. The relay entered the meet seeded 17th.

The Calvin women's team is currenlty in 21st place with 24 points with two days of competition left to go. Emory University leads the competition with 297 points.

Scheduled to compete for the Calvin women on Friday are Roberts, Vail and freshman Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) in the 100 breatstroke and Bressler and freshman Kristen Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN) in the 100 backstroke.

On the men's side, Calvin freshman Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the 100 butterfly on Thursday but did not advance out of the morning prelims, placing 29th with a time of 50.85. Rushlow is scheduled to compete on Friday in the 200 butterfly.
