Women's Tennis Defeats Ferris State;
John Ross Previews NCAA III Tournament Game With St. Norbert
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Ferris State 4
The regionally-ranked Calvin women's tennis team picked up a 5-4 victory over
Division II Ferris State University Tuesday afternoon inside Calvin's Huizenga
Tennis and Track Center. The victory marked Calvin's second win in the last
three years over the Bulldogs. Calvin defeated Ferris State 6-3 in 2008 with
Ferris State defeating Calvin 6-3 in 2009. Calvin is now 3-1 on the year.
The Knights took control of Tuesday's match by taking two of the three doubles
points with seniors Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Rachel
Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) combining for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and
seniors Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and Rachel DeGroot (Lombard,
IL) teaming up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin then clinched the victory with wins at No. 1, 3 and 4 singles with
Oosterhouse winning a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles, Geenen winning 6-3,
7-6 at No. 2 singles and Strikwerda winning 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
Oosterhouse bumped her season singles record to 5-1 while Geenen is now 4-2
and Strikwerda 3-1 in singles play. The doubles tandem of DeGroot and Geenen is
4-0 while Strikwerda and VanVeen have combined for a 3-1 doubles mark thus
far.
Calvin will now break until March 17 when it hosts Olivet at 4 p.m. in its
conference opener.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin Sports Information department caught up with Calvin women’s
basketball coach John Ross Tuesday morning to talk about the upcoming NCAA III
Tournament in an audio interview. The Knights of Calvin will open NCAA III
Tournament play Friday at 8:30 p.m. (EST) against the Green Knights of St.
Nobert College. Calvin will be making its 12th trip to the NCAA III Tournament
including its fourth trip under Ross. Calvin is 14-11 all-time in NCAA III
Tournament play including 6-3 under Ross. Calvin will be part of a four-team
regional tournament at St. Norbert with Wisconsin-Stevens Point taking on
Minnesota-Morris in the opening first round game Friday at 6 p.m. (EST).
Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, senior citizens and
children.
