Women's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches in Chicago Suburbs;
Track and Field Teams Compete at Trine Invitational;
Cross Country Teams/Athletes Receive Academic Accolades
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, North Central 1
Wheaton (IL) 6, Calvin 3
 
The regionally-ranked Calvin women's tennis teams split a pair of non-conference matches this past weekend, defeating North Central (IL) 8-1 on Friday night and then falling at nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) 6-3 on Saturday evening.
 
Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, the Knights are now 2-1 overall.
 
In the win at North Central on Friday, Calvin took five of the six singles points with junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning at No. 1 singles, junior Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 2 singles, senior Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 3 singles, senior Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) winning at No. 4 singles and senior Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) winning at No. 6 singles. In doubles play, Oosterhouse and Spoelhof won at No. 1 doubles, senior Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Strikwerda won at No. 2 doubles and Geenen and Rachel DeGroot won at No. 3 doubles.
 
In the match against Wheaton, ranked 20th nationally and seventh in the Central Region, Oosterhouse picked up a big 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles while junior Michelle Busscher (Western Michigan Christian HS) was a winner at No. 5 singles. Wheaton took the remaining four singles flights. Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles with DeGroot and Geenen picking up a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) win.
 
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Ferris State in a non-conference match at 3 p.m. inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
ANGOLA, IN -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Trine Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday. In the men's competition, Calvin was second with 109.5 points, just a half-point behind Hope. In the women's competition, Calvin rolled up a first place total of 199 points, 71 points ahead of Hope.
 
A highlight for the Calvin women came in the 400 meter dash as junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) clocked an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 57.83. Junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) also had a big day, winning the long jump (16-4 1/2) and placing second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.79).
 
In the women's shot put, junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) had an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 42-5 1/2. Other individual winners for the Calvin women included senior Jesi Hale (Gallup, NM) in the 5,000 meter run (17:55.38), junior Rebekah Van Dyk (Bellflower, CA) in the high jump (5-1 3/4), senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) in the pole vault (11-3), and sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) in the triple jump (34-4).
 
Calvin also swept all three relays with its 4x200 meter relay of junior Katie Roelofs (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore Jordan Gabrielse (Unity Christian HS), Wigboldy and Peterson winning in a time of 1:50.24, its 4x400 meter relay of Gabrielse, Roelofs, junior Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and junior Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning in a time of 4:06.76 and its distance medley relay team of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL), Borener, sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Liz Smit (Kirkland, WA) winning with an NCAA III indoor provisional qualifying time of 12:13.95.
 
In the men's competition, senior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:24.50 while sophomore Dan Kerr (Petoskey HS) was second (15:25.00) and senior Tim Langenberg (Grand Ledge HS) third (15:26.46). Senior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) also had a big afternoon, winning the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-6 while finishing second in thye 60 meter hurdles (8.72).
 
In the mile run, Calvin took three of the top four spots led by sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN) who was first in a time of 4:23.95 followed by junior Ben Van Wyk (Sussex, NJ) in third (4:31.34) and senior George Visser (Winfield, L) in fourth (4:32.17).
 
Calvin's distance medley relay team of senior Nate DeHaan (South Christian HS), sophomore Carson Sterchi (Crystal Lake, IL), junior Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN) and senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) took first place with a time of 10:16.12.
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
 
A group of individuals from the Calvin men's and women's cross country teams have received All-Academic accolades from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America.
 
The USTFCCCA All-Academic award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 35 among the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
Receiving All-Academic honors on the men's side from Calvin are senior Aaron Goodman and freshman Matt Vander Roest. Receiving the awards on the women's side from Calvin are junior Gretchen Braymer, senior Sarah Dugan and senior Jessica Koster.
Goodman is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Milwaukee Lutheran High School. An engineering major at Calvin, Goodman was 19th at the Great Lakes Regional meet and later placed 90th at the NCAA III Championships. Also an engineering major,
 
Vander Roest is from Ann Arbor and is a graduate of Ann Arbor Huron High School. At the Great Lakes Regional meet, Vander Roest was 14th and later placed 51st at the NCAA III Championships.

Braymer is from Erie, Pennsylvania. She is a graduate of Collegiate Academy. An elementary education major, Braymer was 18th at the Great Lakes Regional meet and 150th at the NCAA III Championships.
 
Dugan is from Freeland and is a graduate of Freeland High School. She plans a career in occupational therapy. Dugan was 15th at the regional meet and 201st at the NCAA III Championships.
 
Koster is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She also plans a career in occupational therapy. Koster was 10th at the Great Lakes Regional meet and then nabbed an All-America berth by placing 34th at the NCAA III Championships.
