All-MIAA Swimming & Diving Teams Announced;
Track and Field Athletes Post Provisional Marks at Grand Valley State
Invitational;
Hockey Team Drops Heartbreaker to Oakland in Regional Tournament
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AN DIVING
 
The All-MIAA men's and women's swimming and diving teams have been announced
and six members of the Calvin women's team have been so honored while one
member of the Calvin men's team has been selected.
 
Calvin athletes that have been selected to the All-MIAA women's swimming and
diving team include seniors Emily Roberts, Maggie Vail and Casey Herman, junior
Monica Bressler and freshmen Rachel Bos and Elizabeth Counsell.
 
On the men's side, Calvin freshman Mark Rushlow has been named to the All-MIAA
team.
 
A native of DeKalb, Illinois (DeKalb High School), Roberts is making her fourth
straight appearance on the All-MIAA team and in doing so, is the 11th
individual in Calvin women's swimming and diving history to receive All-MIAA
honors four straight years.
 
At the recent MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Roberts placed second in
the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, recording NCAA III B' cut
qualifying times in all three events. She was also a part of Calvin's MIAA
champion 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
 
A native of Portage (Portage Northern HS), Vail is making her third appearance
on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships last week, she captured first
place in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke and was a member of
Calvin's MIAA champion 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams. Vail has
also been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Swimmer, marking the eighth time in
the last nine years that a Calvin women’s swimmer has been so honored.
 
Herman is from Libertyville, Illinois (Libertyville HS). She is appearing on
the All-MIAA team for the first time. At last week’s MIAA Championships, Herman
took first place on the one-meter board (441.25) and second on the three-meter
board (433.0).
 
A native of Sandusky, Ohio (Perkins HS), Bressler is receiving All-MIAA
accolades for the second time. Bressler was a three-time individual event
winner at the conference meet, winning the 50 freestyle (23.76), 100 backstroke
(.58.66) and 200 backstroke (2:09.94). She was also a part of Calvin’s MIAA
champion 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams.
 
Bos is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High
School.
 
At the conference meet, Bos took third in the 100 freestyle (53.60), fourth in
the 50 freestyle (24.33) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (59.73) and was a
member of Calvin’s MIAA champion 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
 
Counsell is from Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a graduate of Heritage Christian
High School. At the MIAA Championships, she was third in the 100 breaststroke
(1:06.53), fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.96) and ninth in the 200 IM
(2:14.68).
 
Rushlow was one of Calvin’s top point producers in the men’s conference meet. A
native of Goshen, Indiana (Northridge HS), Rushlow was third in the 100
butterfly (50.29), fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.56) and ninth in the 50
freestyle (21.48).
 
The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team took first place at the conference
championships with 939 points, allowing the Knights to capture their sixth
consecutive league title as well as their eighth title overall.
 
On the men’s side, Calvin took fourth with 428 points, a 93-point improvement
over its 2009 conference meet score.
  
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams posted a pair
of NCAA (indoor) provisional qualifying marks Friday night at the Grand Rapids
Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.
 
Both provisional performances came in the women's competition. Calvin's first
provisional mark came in the women's shot put as junior Sarah Reasoner
(Cambridge, MNIn the distance medley relay, Calvin's quartet of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton,
IL), junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South
Christian HS) and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) took first place with a
provisional qualifying tie of 12:04.18. Calvin's back-up squad of junior Alison
Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Jordan Gabrielese (Unity Christian
HS), junior Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and sophomore Rebecca Hiemstra
(Dusseldorf, Germany) took second with a strong time of 12:23.20. Calvin also
received wins from senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the
5,000 meters (18:11.33) and junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) in the long jump
(16-10 1/5). Wigboldy was also seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9.85) and
eighth in the 200 meter dash (27.90).
 
In the pole vault, senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) matched a season’s
best with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11-7 ¾ while sophomore
teammate Kelly Veldkamp (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second at 10-8.
Sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) added a second place finish in the triple
jump (33-3 ¼).
 
In the men’s competition, senior Ben Van Wyk (Sussex, NJ) won the 5,000 meter
run (15:09.00) while freshman Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL) was second in the
mile run (4:17.79).
 
Senior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) also had a strong meeting, taking third in the
60 meter hurdles (8.72) and fourth in the high jump (6-4 ¾). Senior Zach
VanderLaan (Holt, MI) was also fifth in the long jump (19-6 ¾).
 
Both Calvin teams will compete next Saturday at a meet hosted by Trine
University.
 
ACHA HOCKEY
 
Calvin’s bid for a berth in the ACHA Division III National Tournament came up
short Friday evening as the Knights dropped a heart-breaking 6-5 overtime loss
to Oakland University in an ACHA Regional semifinal game. Justin Blaauwendraat
and John Kersaan had two goals apiece for Calvin in the loss while Derek
Bandstra also scored.
 
Calvin will close out its season next Friday and Saturday at the Michigan
Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament with the Knights set to face Saginaw
Valley State on Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Midland Civic Arena.
 
The Knights are currently 16-9-0-1 on the season.
