MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed competition
on Saturday night at the MIAA Championships. The Calvin women took first place
with a meet record 939 points while the Calvin men took fourth with 428 points,
a 93-point improvement over its 2009 score at the conference championships.
 
On the women’s side, Calvin senior Maggie Vail was named the MIAA’s Most
Valuable Swimmer. During the three days of competition, Vail won the 200 IM,
100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, recording strong NCAA B’ cut qualifying
times in all three events. She was also a part of Calvin’s MIAA championship
200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
 
ALLENDALE – The Calvin men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams
completed competition at the two-day Grand Valley State Big Meet on Saturday.
 
Highlights for the Calvin women included:
 
*Sophomore Kaitlin Diemer clocking a time of 2:21.88 in the 800 freestyle.
 
*Senior Nicole Farr placing 8th in the mile run (5:12.56) in mile run and
sophomore Rebecca Hiemstra placing 11th (5:16.13).
 
*Senior Jesi Hale winning the open 5,000 meter run (17:58.98).
 
*Calvin’s distance medley relay team placing fifth (12:14.83).
 
*Senior Joy Leach placing sixth in the pole vault (11-3 3/4).
 
*Senior Elizabeth Smit,placing 12th in 3,000 meter invitation only race
(10:24.15).
 
On the men’s side, Saturday highlights included:
 
*Freshman Greg Whittle recording a time of 1:58.42 in the 800 meters.
 
*Calvin’s distance medley relay team recording a time of 10:15.03.
 
*Senior Caleb Rottman recording a jump of 6-4 ¼.
 
*Senior Zach VanderLaan recording a leap of 21-8 3/4 in the long jump.
 
On Friday night, both Calvin teams had sterling performances. In the women’s
competition Friday night, junior Rachel Boerner had an NCAA III automatic
qualifying time of 56.43 in the 400 meters while senior Jessica Koster had an
NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 17:33.13 in the invitational only 5,000
meter run.
 
On the men’s side, senior Jed Christiansen clocked an automatic qualifying
time of 14:26.56 in the invitational only 5,000 meter run. Sophomore Nick
Kramer also had a provisional qualifying time of 14:38.37 in the men’s
invitational only 5K.
 
In the invitational only 800 meter run, junior Alex Wrobel had a provisional
qualifying time of 1:54.49.
 
MEN’S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS – The Calvin men’s tennis team competed at the two-day Grand
Rapids City Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Orchard Hills Tennis
Center. The two day competition was unscored. In addition to Calvin, teams
competing included Aquinas, Grand Valley State and Grand Rapids Community
College.
 
In singles competition, senior Andrew Rescorla was the tournament champion at
number-four singles, defeating Pat Snyder of Grand Valley 7-5, 6-1 in the
championship final.
 
Freshman Brian DeMaagd also reached the finals of the number-two singles
flight as did freshman Phil Reinken at number-seven singles and sophomore Jon
Goorhouse at number-eight singles.
 
In doubles competition, Calvin’s tandem of junior Andrew DeVlieger and
Goorhouse won the championship at number-four doubles, defeating a tandem from
Grand Rapids Community College 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. DeMaagd and Rescorla
also reached the finals at number-two doubles.
 
Calvin returns to action on March 11 when it hosts Davenport in a
non-conference ,match at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
 
MEN’S BASKETBALL

On Saturday, Calvin celebrated the 10-year reunion of its 1999-2000 national
championship men’s basketball team. In two years, Calvin will celebrate the
20-year reunion of its 1991-92 national championship men’s basketball team.
 
In both championship years, celebratory highlight videos were produced. Those
highlight videos are now on-line.
