MEN'S BASKETBALL
Hope 67, Calvin 64

HOLLAND -- An opportunity to gain firm command of the MIAA league race slipped
away from the Calvin men's basketball team in the closing minutes on Saturday
as the Knights suffered a 67-64 defeat at Hope. The Hope victory snapped a
seven-game Calvin win streak and also handed the Knights their first league
defeat. Hope (13-6 overall, 6-2 MIAA) is now just one game behind Calvin (12-7
overall, 7-1 MIAA) in the league standings.

Calvin led 61-58 on a pair of free throws by senior Matt Veltema (Calvin
Christian HS) with 2:33 left on the clock and had a chance to widen the lead
moments later but missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line,
allowing Hope to regain the basketball. Hope junior Peter Bunn then stepped up
with a clutch triple to tie the score at 61 with 1:46 remaining.

Calvin missed a shot on its next possession with Hope grabbing the rebound.
The Flying Dutchmen then took a 63-61 lead on a tip-in by junior Will Bowser
with 55 seconds left on the clock. Calvin then missed a three-point shot with
31 seconds left and was forced to foul. The Flying Dutchmen proceeded to hit
four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Calvin entered the game as the MIAA's leading free throw shooting team,
averaging 73.6 percent in overall games and 79.3 percent in conference games.
On Saturday however, Calvin was just 14 of 25 (.560) at the free throw line
while Hope hit all seven of its free throw attempts.

Hope also hit 8 of 16 (.500) from beyond the three-point arc and outrebounded
Calvin 45-39.

"I think the rebounding statistic is what is most disappointing to me today,"
said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "Hope has outrebounded
us two games in a row and I thought their determination around the glass was a
big key to this game. I thought Hope's defensive intensity was also outstanding
and was a big part of the final outcome."

Calvin trailed 29-22 late in the first half but rallied behind a pair of
three-pointers by junior Danny Rodts (Niles HS) to cut the deficit to 33-31 at
halftime.

In the second half, Calvin took its first lead since the opening moments of
the game on a shot in close by senior Paul Campbell (West Potomac, MD) that
gave the Knights a 41-40 advantage. Hope regained the lead at 50-49 on a triple
by senior Chris Nelis with the lead then changing hands three times over the
next four minutes with Calvin taking a 57-56 advantage on a three-point play by
freshman Tom Snikkers (Unity Christian HS) with 5:25 remaining.

Calvin then held the lead until Bunn's dramatic triple, setting up the frantic
final finish.

Calvin was led in scoring by Snikkers with 16 points while senior John Mantel
(Chelsea HS) had 14 points and nine rebounds. Rodts finished with 10 points
while junior Brent Schuster (Denver, CO) had seven points and seven rebounds.

With his 14-point effort, Mantel moved past Dan Davis and Kyle VanderBrug and
into 12th place on the Calvin career scoring list, building his career total to
1,134 points.

Hope was led in scoring by Will Bowser who had a game-high 20 points while
Nelis and Bunn had 14 points apiece.

Saturday's game marked the 175th meeting between Calvin and Hope in men's
basketball with Hope now maintaining an 89-86 series lead. Saturday's game also
marked the third meeting of the year between the two teams with Hope winning a
non-conference game at Calvin 79-76 on November 28 and Calvin winning a
conference game (at Calvin) 84-75 on January 6.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Olivet for a 7:30
