Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams Claim Dual Meet Victories

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Calvin men's swimming and diving team improved to 3-3 in dual meet competition including 3-1 against MIAA opponents with a 151-77 victory over Alma Friday night at Calvin's Venema Aquatic Center. On the women's side, Calvin picked up victories over both Alma and Saint Mary's to up its overall dual meet record to 6-2 including 5-0 against MIAA opponents. The Calvin women defeated Alma 166-70 and Saint Mary's 177.5-58.5. Alma defeated Saint Mary's 125-97.
 
In the men's dual meet, Calvin received first place performances from sophomore Ross Battoclette in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 10:10.72 and in the 100 butterfly (56.58) while freshman Mark Rushlow won the 200 freestyle (1:49.61), freshman Stephen Kraft the 100 backstroke (56.99), sophomore Greg Gorham won the 500 freestyle (5:05.46) and freshman Mathias Bares won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.45).
 
In addition, Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Kyle Garringer, Rushlow, senior Jon Herrema and senior Kurt Van Allsburg took first place with a time of 3:19.88.
 
In the women's competition, Calvin's diving contingent of seniors Joy Leach and Casey Herman, junior Carmen Brummel and freshman Samantha Klaasen highlighted the evening. In the one-meter diving competition, Leach, Herman and Klaasen all posted NCAA III qualifying scores with Leach winning with a season-best effort of 268.10 while Herman was second (264.40) and Klaasen fourth (258.55). Brummel was fifth with a strong score of 225.20.
 
Leach now has the distinction of posting NCAA III qualifying scores in two seperate sports this winter. Last Friday, Leach recorded an NCAA III indoor provisional qualifying vault of 11-9 3/4 the pole vault in track and field at a meet hosted by Grand Valley State University. Leach is currently ranked 10th on the NCAA III indoor qualifying list for the pole vault for women's track and field.
 
In the three-meter diving competition, Herman took first with a score of 248.05 while Brummel was third (239.60) and Klaasen fourth (229.20).
 
Other individual first place performances for the Calvin women on Friday included senior Libby Veldkamp in the 1,000 freestyle (11:03.11), senior Laura Price in the 200 freestyle (1:59.09), junior Monica Bressler in the 50 freestyle (24.76), freshman Rachel Colasurdo in the 200 IM (2:15.73) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.04) and sophomore Bridget Scott in the 500 freestyle (5:25.74).
 
Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Briana Seaks, junior Brianna Vanden Ende, freshman Shelby Clody and freshman Rachel Bos took first place with a time of 3:44.60 while its 400 medley relay team of freshman Stephanie Fox, Colasurdo, Price and senior Alyssa Ludema took first place with a time of 4:16.55.
 
Both Calvin teams return to action on Saturday when they compete in dual meets at rival Hope with action slated to start at 1 p.m. in Holland.
