Women's Swimming & Diving 2nd at U. of Chicago Invitational - Men 4th;
Hockey Team Drops Weekend Series to Grand Valley State
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
 
CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed two days of competition at the University of Chicago Invitational late Saturday night with the women's team finishing second with 1,162 points, 38 points behind host Chicago. On the men's side, Calvin finished fourth with 560 points with host Chicago winning the competition with a total of 1,253.5 points.
 
Highlights for the Calvin women's team on Saturday included:
 
*Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Monica Bressler, Emily Roberts, Kristen Kinzer and Maggie Vail winning in a time of 1:51.08.
 
*Freshman Rachel Colasurdo placing third in the 400 IM (4:47.04)
 
*Roberts placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.24)
 
*Calvin sweeping the top four spots in the 100 freestyle led by freshman Stephanie Fox in first (1:57.10) followed by senior Laura Price in second (1:58.99), junior Kendra Kinzer in third (1:59.79) and freshman Shelby Cloyd in fourth (2:01.04)
 
*Senior Maggie Vail winning the 100 breaststroke (1:07.56) and freshman Elizabeth Counsell taking third (1:09.67)
 
*Bressler winning the 100 backstroke (1:02.47) with Kristen Kinzer fourth (1:03.51) and sophomore Brianna VandenEnde fifth (1:04.23)
 
*Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Colasurdo, Fox, senior Libby Veldkamp and Price taking first place with a time of 7:59.81
 
*Price taking third in the 1,650 freestyle (18:08.87) and Cloyd taking sixth (18:24.98)
 
*Calvin taking four of the top five diving spots on the one-meter board with freshman Sam Klaasen taking second (391.50), senior Casey Herman placing third (385.70), junior Carmen Brummel taking fourth (345.80) and senior Joy Leach taking fifth (336.75)
 
*Bressler taking second in the 200 backstroke (2:15.43) with Caitlin Alexander fifth (2:20.81) and Vanden Ende sixth (2:21.04)
 
*Fox winning the 100 freestyle in 54.58 with Colasurdo second (55.29) and freshman Rachel Bos fourth (55.89).
 
*Vail and Roberts going 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke with Vail first (2:25.97) and Roberts second (2:28.36).
 
*Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Colasurdo, Fox, Vail and Price winning in a time of 3:40.19.
 
Highlights for the Calvin men's team on Saturday included:
 
*Freshman Stephen Kraft placing eighth in the 400 IM (4:33.93)
 
*Freshmen Mark Rushlow and Ryan Martinie placing fourth (53.97) and fifth (54.13) respectively in the 100 butterfly
 
*Sophomore Ross Battoclette placing fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:48.12)
 
*Sophomore Greg Gorham taking fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.46)
 
*Senior Kurt VanAllsburg placing third in the 100 backstroke (55.11) and sophomore Tyler Westman placing seventh (56.84)
 
*Freshman Matthias Bares taking third in the 1,650 freestyle (17:04.99)
 
*Battoclette taking seventh in the 200 backstroke (2:03.04)
 
*Rushlow taking sixth in the 100 freestyle (49.44) and sophomore Ethan Tatum placing eighth (49.49)
 
*Martinie taking eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:07.16)
 
*Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of of Rushlow, Battoclette, VanAllsburg and Tatum taking fourth in 3:18.86.
 
Both Calvin teams return to action on Saturday when they compete in dual meet action at Kalamazoo.
 
ACHA HOCKEY
 
Calvin's ACHA hockey team will look to snap a five-game losing streak when it hots Lawrence Tech University this Friday at the Jolly Roger Ice Arena. This past weekend, the Knights were swept in a weekend series by Grand Valley State, falling 8-0 on Friday night at Jolly Roger Ice Arena and 5-4 to the Lakers on Saturday night at Georgetown Ice Arena.
 
Scoring goals for Calvin in the loss on Saturday were senior Justin Blaauwendraat, junior Eric Doezema, senior Adam VanOpstall and sophomore Caleb Bosma.
 
Freshman Jason Grinde had 41 saves in defeat. The Knights were outshot by the Lakers 46-26.
 
Friday's game against Lawrence Tech is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Jolly Roger. The Knights are currently 11-6-0-1.
