John Mantel Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Men's Basketball;
Women's Basketball Moves Up in National Rankings;

MEN'S BASKETBALL

John Mantel, a senior from Chelsea (Chelsea HS) has been named the MIAA Player
of the Week in men’s basketball. Mantel shares the award this week with
Kalamazoo’s Joe Prepolec.

Mantel put together back-to-back double-doubles as the Knights opened MIAA
play with a pair of home victories. He scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds
in an 84-75 win over Hope, then followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a
65-61 win over Olivet.
He made 12 of 25 shots from the field (48 percent) and 9 of 13 (69 percent)
from the free throw line, and added three blocked shots in the two games.
Mantel is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season
and fourth time in his career.
Calvin is currently 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Knights return to
action on Wednesday night when they travel to Trine for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin women's basketball team continues to move up the national rankings.
 The Knights are now ranked 12th in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches
Poll - up one spot from a week ago. In addition, Calvin is ranked 17th in the
latest d3hoops.com Top 25 poll - up three spots from the previous week.
Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Knights are off to a 12-1
start overall and a 4-0 mark in the MIAA. Calvin is currently tied with Hope
for first place in the MIAA standings and will host Albion Wednesday at 7:30
p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

MEN'S SOCCER
The national runner-up Calvin men's soccer team was recently honored with a
ceremony during halftime of the Calvin-Hope men's basketball game January 6 at
Van Noord Arena. The entire ceremony was captured on video by Calvin student
videographer Mike Zaagman.
