Men's Basketball Clipped by Loras at Grand Canyon Cactus Jam

PHOENIX, AZ -- Calvin's three-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by Loras (IA) 78-61 on the third and final day of competition at the Grand Canyon Cactus Jam.
A rough first half effort proved to be Calvin's undoing as the Knights (5-6) trailed 46-21 at halftime. Calvin connected on only five first half field goals while allowing Loras (6-6) to shoot 17 of 29 (.586) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Calvin came back to whittle the deficit down to 14 points at 71-57 late in the second half but could get no closer.
Calvin was led in scoring by freshman Tom Snikkers with 14 points while senior John Mantel had nine points and six rebounds. With his nine points, Mantel moved past 1961 Calvin graduate Bill Wolterstorff and into 17th place on the all-time Calvin scoring list. Mantel currently has 1,021 career points and trails Kevin Broene for 16th place by 23 points. Junior Danny Rodts also had nine points for Calvin in defeat.
Loras was paced by Mike Gleason with 21 points while Tim Kelly had 17. Loras was 11 of 24 from three-point range including 7 of 14 in the first half. Loras also held a 36-28 rebounding advantage.
Calvin shot 35.6 percent (16 of 45) overall, connecting on just 21.7 percent (5 of 23) in the first half but rebounding to hit 50 percent (11 of 22) in the second half.
Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener next Wednesday when it hosts rival Hope at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
