In the first of a three day invitational meet held at Calvin’s Venema
Aquatic Center, the Knights sent out their distance swimmers to compete in some
lengthy races against a plethora of worthy opponents. After one day of
competition, Grand Valley State leads the men’s standings with 147 points and
the women’s standings with 142 points. Calvin is fourth in the women’s
standings with 48 points and fourth in the men’s standings with 38 points.

The events that were held in the three hour event Thursday night, as the snow
came down outside for the first time since students have been back on campus
from Thanksgiving break, were the 800 yd free relay and the mile.

The women started out the meet in the 800 yd free relay, with Calvin’s A
team finishing in 6th place with a time of 7:57.50. The winner of that race
was the Bowling Green State A-team, which finished in a time of 7:37.97.

After that race there was a string of 1650 yd freestyle heats. Calvin’s
best finishes in these was a 9th overall finish on the men’s side by freshman
Mathias Bares, who completed his heat in 17:20.00, and the 12th and 13th best
times on the women’s side by Bridget Scott and Shelby Cloyd respectively.
Scott finished in 18:39.23, and Cloyd finishing in 18:39.75.

The final race of the night was the men’s 800 yd free relay. Calvin took
5th in that venture, with the A team coming in with a time of 7:21.65.

The second night of the three day event will commence tomorrow night, Friday,
at 6:00 p.m. again at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.
