Women's Basketball Defeats Manchester - Moves Into Top 25 Rankings

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 60, Manchester 44

MANCHESTER, IN -- A few hours after moving into the top 25 in both the D3hoops.com and USA Today / ESPN Coaches national polls, the Calvin women's basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 60-44 victory at Manchester College Tuesday evening.

Earlier in the day, Calvin cracked both national polls as the Knights are ranked 25th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and 19th in the USA Today / ESPN Coaches poll.

Calvin rode the hot hand of sophomore point guard Leah Mattson and the strong inside play of senior Brook Van Eck and freshman Carissa Verkaik to gain the win. Mattson scored a career-high 14 points in the win as she was 4-of-5 from three-point range and 5-of-7 overall from the field.

Van Eck had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals while Verkaik had 10 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists.

Calvin also hit 10-of-14 (.714) of its attempts from the free throw line and 42.3 percent of its field goal attempts.

Calvin led 32-25 at halftime and broke open the game with a 16-4 run midway through the second half.

Manchester (0-6) was led in defeat by Kailey Honn with 14 points. The host Spartans shot just 32.3 percent from the field.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to an undefeated Carthage College (WI) team that has been receiving votes in the national polls. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. (EST).
