WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has
named Calvin forward Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s
basketball for games played through November 29.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 49 points,
pulled down 26 rebounds and blocked nine shots in earning tournament Most
Valuable Player honors at the Olivet Comet Classic. She scored 26 points and
added 13 rebounds in a 79-66 victory over Elmhurst, Ill., then came back the
next day to score 23 points, pull down 13 boards and block five shots as the
Knights defeated Siena Heights, 86-73.
Verkaik is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her
career. Verkaik is averaging 17.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots a
game. She has four double-doubles on the season and has helped Calvin win its
first five games.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Manchester
(IN) for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game. The game will feature live stats,

Chris Hughes on Monday morning for an audio interview. In the interview, Hughes
recaps the 2009 season and looks ahead to the upcoming NCAA III Final Four in
San Antonio, Texas.

FATHER/SON CONNECTION FEATURED WITH CALVIN MEN'S SOCCER TEAM
The 2009 Calvin men's soccer team features a pair of legacy players in junior
forward Brad Heethuis and freshman forward Joe Broekhuizen. Both players are
sons of fathers who are former Calvin men's soccer players as Randy Heethuis
and Brian Broekhuizen were teammates in the early 1980's and members of
Calvin's 1980 team that reached the NCAA III Quarterfinals.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host the
first-ever Calvin Winter Invitational this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the
Venema Aquatic Center. The invitational will include teams from from Olivet,
Valparaiso, Kalamazoo, Grand Valley State, Alma, Northern Michigan (women),
Bowling Green State (women), Michigan State, Hillsdale, Denison (divers only)
Trinity, TX (divers only).
