Knights take opener in Midwest Challenge
by Calvin Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot

GRAND RAPIDS -- Rebounding from a disappointing loss to Hope on Wednesday, the
Knight’s strong defense and powerful attack pushed Calvin past Olivet in the
2009 Midwest Challenge. Calvin swept Olivet in three sets, winning 25-14,
25-12, 25-14.

Calvin (22-6 overall, 13-2 MIAA) dominated the Comets at the net, putting up a
12-4 advantage in the block column as well as 42-18 number in kills. Sophomore
Rebecca Kamp credited 14 of Calvin’s kills to her own name, doing so with a
remarkably efficient .500 kill percentage.

“It’s always important to see how you react after a loss,” said Coach
Amber Warners. She continued, “We did a nice job staying intense the whole
game.”

That intensity translated to scrappiness on the floor, with Senior libero
Kelsey Sears amassing 18 of Calvin’s 55 digs in the match.

“Our defense, front and back row, did a really nice job. Our back row was
reading the hit and digging it up,” said Warners.

Senior Nora Bruskewitz handled all setting duties for the nets, dishing out 38
assists as well as three service aces in the match.

The Knights controlled the early portion of the match, owning the net in their
first set victory and not conceding a lead until early in the second set.
After Melanie Merchant served Olivet to a 7-6 lead, Calvin stormed back with
four unanswered points. Calvin then continued to roll to a 25-12 victory in
the second set.
In the third set, consecutive blocks from sophomores Erin Vander Plas and
Rebecca Kamp propelled Calvin to a 15-10 lead. Sears then closed out the match
with an ace on game point, giving Calvin a 25-14 victory to take the match.

This match came in the first round of the Midwest Challenge, hosted by Calvin,
Hope, and Trine. In addition to the hosts, Adrian Hanover, Manchester, Olivet,
and Saint Mary’s all compete in the tournament.

In Calvin’s final match on Friday, the Knights defeated Manchester 25-17,
25-9, 25-14 behind 13 kills from Rebecca Kamp, seven kills from junior Kim
Wigboldy and 36 assists from senior Nora Bruskewitz. Senior Kelsey Sears also
had 20 digs with senior Katie Corbett contributing 10 digs.
