Men's Golf Third at MIAA Jamboree #4 - Move Within A Stroke of Second Place in Overall MIAA Standings

MEN'S GOLF

KALAMAZOO - A year ago, the Milham Park Golf Club proved to be a stumbling block for the Calvin men's golf team. On Thursday, the course became a potential building block for the Knights who are making a strong bid for a big push up the MIAA standings at the mid-point of the conference season.

On Thursday, Calvin posted a third place team score of 298 strokes at the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the league season, hosted by Kalamazoo at the Milham Park Golf Club, allowing the Knights to move into a tie for second place with Adrian in the overall team standings. A year ago, the Knights closed out their 2008 MIAA campaign at the same course, fading to a sixth place team score of 329 strokes, leaving Calvin in fifth place in the final league standings.

Calvin currently sits in tie for second place in the 2009 MIAA standings with an overall stroke total of 1211 strokes. Calvin also widened its overall MIAA lead over fourth place Trine to 14 strokes as the Knights placed four strokes ahead of Trine's team score of 302 on Thursday.

Calvin had five individuals post scores under 80 on Thursday led by junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 72 that left him tied for third place individually. Senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was close behind with a 74 that was good for an 11th place tie. Freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also had a strong effort in his hometown, carding a round of 75. Closing out Calvin's finishers were junior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with rounds of 77.

Alex Lorencz of Trine earned medalist honors with a round of 68 on Thursday. Hope took first place team honors on Thursday with a score of 293. The Flying Dutchmen now hold a 13-stroke lead over Calvin and Adrian with four league competitions left on the schedule.
