ANGOLA, IN -- The nationally-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team escaped Trine University's Hershey Hall with a five-set victory Wednesday night, narrowly avoiding an early conference upset bid by the host Thunder. Calvin edged Trine by scores of 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 15-10.

Ranked 10th nationally, Calvin (6-1 overall, 3-0 MIAA), Calvin held control early, rolling through set one and then using a 6-1 run late in set two to take a 2-0 match lead. Trine (5-3 overall, 2-2 MIAA) fought back with a set three victory and then built a 22-17 lead in set four, only to see the Knights score five unanswered points to tie the set at 22. Trine scored the next three points however to force a deciding set five.

In the fifth set, Calvin grabbed an early 6-2 lead and then built an 11-7 advantage. Trine was able to close to within 11-9 but would get no closer as the Knights went on a 4-1 run to close out the match.

Sophomore Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led Calvin with 14 kills while junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) had seven kills and sophomore Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) six kills.

Junior setter Carolyn Nelson (Milan/Milan HS) had 23 assists while senior libero Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/Traverse City West HS) had 18 digs.
