Women's Cross Country Tied For Top Spot in Pre-Season National Poll - Men's
Cross Country Team Ranked Seventh/Calvin Professor To Be Inducted Into Central
College Athletics Hall of Fame

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The Calvin women's cross country team shares the top spot in the first set of
Division III women's national rankings released by the United States Track and
Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights share the number-one spot
with defending national champion Middlebury (VT). Both teams picked up a total
of 275 points in the poll although Middlebury received five of a possible eight
first place votes with Calvin receiving the remaing three votes. Calvin
finished second at last year's NCAA III Cross Country Championships, recording
points 237 points with Middlebury winning with a score of 179 points.
Middlebury, the top-ranked team in the New England Region, will field a young
but experienced team for the ’09 cross country season as five of the top
seven runners from last year’s championship squad all return. The top-ranked
team in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin also returns five of its top seven
runners from a year ago. Calvin is led by seniors Lauren Bergstrom, Jessica
Koster, and Jesi Hale. Bergstrom finished 21st individually at the national
meet last year.

Meanwhile, the Calvin men's cross country team is ranked seventh in the first
Division III men's rankings. North Central (IL) is the top-ranked team,
receiving six of a possible eight first place votes. Wisconsin-LaCrosse is
ranked second with Cortland State of New York ranked third, Williams (MA)
ranked fourth, Geneseo State (NY) ranked fifth, Allegheny (PA) ranked sixth and
Calvin seventh.

Both Calvin cross country teams will open their seasons on September 19 in
hosting the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

CALVIN PROFESSOR TO BE INDUCTED INTO CENTRAL COLLEGE ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

Mark Muyskens, a Calvin College professor of chemistry, will be inducted into
the Central College Athletics Hall of Honor as part of the college's Homecoming
festivities in September. A 1982 graduate of Central, located in Pella, Iowa,
Muyskens was a team captain in both cross country and track and participated in
NCAA Championships in both sports.

He was conference MVP in cross country and a three-time league champion in
track in the steeplechase. Muyskens, who has a PhD in physical chemistry from
the University of Wisconsin at Madison, has taught at Calvin in the chemistry
department since 1989 and continues to be a regular recreational runner. The
Karen Muyskens Family Fun Run is an annual event on Calvin's campus, named in
honor of his wife Karen who died suddenly in January 2008.
