Calvin Third in Final NCAA III Women's Basketball Attendance - January Game With Trine Breaks NCAA III Single-Game Attendance Mark

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin College has finished third in the final NCAA III women's basketball attendance standings with an average of 1,053 fans per game. Calvin's attendance mark was strengthened by an NCAA III single-game attendance record of 4,395 fans for its January 7, 2009, game against Trine University. The January game against Trine served as the first-ever varsity basketball game inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena. The single-game attendance record was confirmed by the NCAA statistics office this afternoon. It breaks the previous NCAA III single-game attendance mark of 4,356 fans established by Howard Payne (TX) during an NCAA III Tournament second round game against Chapman on March 3, 2007.

Calvin captured the January 7 meeting against Trine in thrilling fashion, winning 71-65 in double-overtime. The contest was the first of four overtime games that the Knights played inside the Van Noord Arena during the month of January.

Calvin finished the 2008-09 season with 9,480 fans over nine home dates. Calvin also drew 3,175 fans for a February 21, 2009, game against rival Hope with the Flying Dutch pulling out a 68-65 decision in the final minute of play. The contest served as Calvin's homecoming game and also marked the first time that Calvin has used a woman's basketball game as its exclusive homecoming basketball contest.

Hope captured the 2008-09 attendance crown with an average of 1,269 fans per game, drawing 21, 581 spectators over 17 home contests. Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished second with an average of 1,055 fans per game with Bowdoin (ME) fourth (1,012).

Together, Calvin and Hope helped the MIAA finish fourth in the final conference attendance standings with the league averaging 422 fans per contest, with the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leading the way with an average of 501 fans per game.

Calvin finished the 2008-09 season with an overall record of 16-9. The Knights are scheduled to open their 2009-10 season on November 17 when it hosts Cornerstone University. Calvin's upcoming season schedule can be found on-line at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports/womens/basketball/schedule.htm
