TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES COMPETE AT LAST-CHANCE MEET HOSTED BY NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE
NAPERVILLE, IL -- A group of Calvin track and field athletes competed at the North Central Gregory Invitational Thursday and Friday night, hoping to improve season performances and in some instances, qualifiy for next week's NCAA III Track and Field Championships.
One athlete who gave himself a chance at qualifying was Calvin sophomore Eric Michel (Naperville, IL) in the pole vault as he recorded a career-best vault of 15-9 3/4 that places him on the bubble on the national qualifying list. Michel's vault was an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark and puts him 15th place on the national list.
On the women's side, sophomore Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) improved her position on the national list in the discus, whipping out a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 144-8 that places her 14th on the national qualifying list.
In the women's pole vault, junior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) and freshman Kelly Veldkamp (Grand Rapids Christian HS) both had season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying marks of 11-8. Junior Carla Lindemulder (Lansing, IL) also had a height of 10-8 1/4 .
In the women's 10,000 meters, junior Sarah Dugan (Freeland HS) had a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 37:06.53 while senior Kelly Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) was fourth (37:56.15).
In the men's 10K, sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) was third (31:25.23) and junior Tim Langenberg (Grand Ledge HS) fourth (31:48.01).
Senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) won the women's triple jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 37-8. Senior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) won the 400 meters with an provisional qualifying time of 56.93.
In the women's 800 meters, senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) was second with a provisional qualifying time of 2:10.16 while sophomore Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was ninth (2:18.54) and senior Laura Jackson (Decatur, IL) 12th (2:18.85).
In the women's, 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA) had a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 10:49.18. The time places Braymer 16th on the national qualifying list. Also coming up with provisional qualifying times for Calvin in the steeplechase were senior Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) with a career-best time of 11:01.04 and junior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL) with a time of 11:10.77.
The list of final NCAA III qualifiers is expected to be released later this weekend.
