CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 30, 2009
MIAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY ONE REPORT
ALBION -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams are in first place through one day of competition at at the MIAA Field Day hosted by Albion College but both teams will have to hold off stern challenges from Hope to maintain a grip on the top spots.
The Calvin men are currently in first place with 71 points, 28 points ahead of Hope (43 points) but the Flying Dutchmen advanced several competitors into the finals in the sprint events set for Friday afternoon.
On the women's side, Calvin holds a 14.5 point lead over Hope as the Knights have a first place total of 66 points.
Thursday's competition took place in a steady driving rain throughout the day. Nevertheless, both Calvin teams were able to crown individual champions.
In the men's competition, Calvin crowned two individual champions on Thursday as sophomore Joel Klingenberg (Hamilton, ON) won the javelin (184-0) while senior Erik Van Kampen (Elmhurst, IL) won the 10,000 meter run for the second time in three years, clocking in with a time of 32:33.80.
Van Kampen led a 1-2-3-5 Calvin finish in the 10K as sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) was second (32:35.82), junior Tim Langenberg (Grand Ledge, Mich.) third (32:40.18) and senior Dave Jaeger (Winfield, IL) fifth (33:31.22).
Klingenberg led a 1-4-6 Calvin finish in the javelin as sophomore Shane Pluger (McBain, Mich.) was fourth (164-5) and junior Tim Buiten (Kent, WA) sixth (160-5).
Calvin also received strong efforts from sophomore Ken Echtinaw (Caledonia HS) and freshman Aaron Clark (Comstock Park HS) in the shot put with Ectinaw taking second (47-7 1/4) and Clark fourth (45-11 1/4). In the long jump, junior Corey Velgersdyk (Bloomington, MN) was third (21-0 3/4) and junior Zach VanderLaan (Holt, Mich.) seventh (20-6 1/4).
In the women's competition, junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) had a huge performance in winning the discus with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 143-0. Senior Ashley Glover (Northview HS) also won the hammer throw with a heave of 138-6. Calvin's final champion of the day was sophomore Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who won the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:03.44. Koster led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 10K as senior Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) was second (38:21.01) and senior Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) third (38:51.94). Freshman Elizabeth Feenstra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also fifth for the Knights (40:06.64).
In the long jump, senior Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) was second (16-9 3/4) while freshman Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) was fifth (15-9 3/4).
Action continues on Friday morning with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m.
