BASEBALL

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Matt
Schepel has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in baseball. A native of
Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Schepel
shares this week’s award with Alma third baseman Jeremy Stephens.

A shortstop, Schepel went 5-for-8 at the plate, including home runs in both
games, in leading the Knights to a doubleheader split with league-leading
Adrian last Friday. Schepel belted a three-run homer in the first game in an
8-2 victory over the Bulldogs, and added a homer and two doubles in the
nightcap in an 11-8 loss. He scored five runs and drove in five more during the
twinbill.

Schepel is currently batting .344 overall this year with 25 runs batted in. In
conference play, he is ranked third in the MIAA in runs batted in with 19.

Calvin is currently 15-14 overall and 12-6 in MIAA play. The Knights are
scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they host Aquinas in a
non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.
