Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game to Davenport;
Softball Swept at Albion

BASEBALL
Davenport 8, Calvin 6

A late-inning comeback came up just short for the Calvin baseball team Wednesday afternoon as the Knights suffered an 8-6 non-conference loss to visiting Davenport University.

Davenport (29-19) bolted out to an 8-0 lead behind a 14-hit attack in the opening four innings. Calvin (14-13) scratched back with two runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to cut the gap to 8-5. In the ninth, Calvin loaded the bases with no outs but brought across just one run on a sacrifice fly by senior Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian HS).

Calvin got on the board with a two-run RBI double by senior Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS) in the fifth and then scored two in the sixth on an RBI triple by junior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and a Davenport error.

In the seventh, senior Jason May (Chicago, IL) led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.

Davenport did not collect a hit off the Calvin pitching staff over the final five innings of play after breaking loose early. Tommy Greeer (2-2) picked up the win for Davenport while sophomore Jeff Groenewold (Chicago, IL) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Calvin picked up 11 hits in defeat with Schepel, Blacklidge and junior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS) all collecting two-hit games.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Adrian for a conference doubleheader set to begin at 2:00 p.m.

SOFTBALL
Albion 8, Calvin 0
Albion 14, Calvin 5

ALBION -- Albion swept a conference doubleheader from Calvin Wednesday afternoon, banging out 12 hits in an 8-0 game one win and 17 hits in a 14-5 game two win.

Senior Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss in game one while junior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) took the loss in game two.

Calvin did pick up 10 hits in game two but also committed four errors. Junior Malissa VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) went 3-for-4 for Calvin in game two including a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Freshman Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) and senior Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS) also had two hits apiece with Moriarity belted her third double of the spring.

Calvin will close out its season this weekend with a pair of conference doubleheaders. The Knights will host Alma Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Olivet on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
