CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 11, 2009
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
ADRIAN – Pressed with a steep challenge by rival Hope, the Calvin men’s
and women’s track and field teams dug down to deliver first place
performances at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College on Saturday. The

the remaining half of the final league crown.

Alma 11, Calvin 6
Calvin 10, Alma 5
ALMA – For the second consecutive day, Calvin split a doubleheader with
Alma. On Saturday, the Knights traveled up to Alma’s Klenk Park and dropped
the opener 11-6 before coming back to win game two 10-5. The split came on the
heels of a doubleheader split just the day before in Grand Rapids. The Knights
are currently in third place in the MIAA standings with an 8-4 conference
record.
In game one, Calvin could not make a 6-0 lead stand up as Alma scored four
runs in the bottom of the fourth and added five more in the bottom of the fifth
to take control of the game. Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning behind a double from senior Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) and a pair of Alma
errors. The Knights tacked on four more runs in the second, using an RBI single
by junior Kyle Gurzynski (Ludington HS), a sacrifice fly by senior Kyle Cousins
(Holland Christian HS) and a two-run homer by junior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) to take a 6-0 lead.
Alma came back with a single run in the bottom of the second and added another
run in the bottom of the third. The Scots then broke loose for four runs off
three hits and two Calvin errors in the fourth inning to tie the game 6-6. In
the fifth, Alma put the game away with five runs on three hits and two more
Calvin errors.
Of the 11 runs scored by the Scots, seven were unearned. Freshman Brett
Cavanaugh (Western Michigan Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to
0-1 on the season in relief of starter Keith Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) who went
2.2 innings of work, surrendering three hits, two runs and two walks. Calvin
collected eight hits in defeat while Alma had nine. The two teams also combined
for eight errors with Calvin committing five.
Pocock led Calvin at the plate with three hits while freshman catcher Matt
Dodrill (Murfreesboro, TN) had two.
In game two, Calvin (11-11 overall, 8-4 MIAA) reaped the benefits of six Alma
errors to score six unearned runs. The Knights took a 6-0 lead with six runs in
the top of the third with freshman Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and
Gurzynski both collecting two-run singles in the inning.
Calvin later added three runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded double by senior
Jason May (Chicago, IL) that cleared the bases. In the seventh, Calvin added an
insurance run on a triple by Gurzysnki and a run-scoring single by Cousins that
Gurzynski home.
Calvin outhit Alma 10-6 in the win but also committed five errors. Pocock got
the win on the mound to run his season record to 1-1 with sophomore Jeff
Groenewold (Chicago, IL) coming on in relief to help preserve the win.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they host Davenport in a
non-conference game at Calvin scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
