CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 21, 2009

NCAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY FOUR REPORT

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team closed out its fifth consecutive top-10 national finish on Saturday at the NCAA III Championships, finishing seventh with a final team score of 171 points.

Over the four day meet hosted by the University of Minnesota, Calvin recorded seven All-America performances and five honorable mention All-America efforts. Calvin picked up its final two honorable mention All-America berths on Saturday as junior Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) finished 15th in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.24) while its 400 freestyle relay team of junior Laura Price (Warren, PA), senior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS), senior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and junior Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL) finished ninth with a season-best time of 3:28.23.

"Our biggest goal this week was to finish in the top 10 again and we did that which is very satisfying," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was also very satisfying to bring 11 athletes to this meet and have 10 of them earn All-America honors - either individually or as part of a relay. Our 400 freestyle relay performance tonight was a great way to end the meet. It was just off a school record and more than a second ahead of any other team in the consolation finals."

During the morning prelims, sophomore Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH) picked up her second school record of the weekend, posting a time of 2:07.56 in the 200 backstroke. Earlier in the meet, Bressler broke her own school record in the 100 backstroke prelims with a time of 58.45.

Also competing for Calvin on Saturday but not advancing to Saturday's finals were VanWoerkom and Price in the 100 freestyle prelims with Price recording a season-best time of 52.50.

Kenyon won both the men's and women's national titles on Saturday with the Kenyon men recording 604 points and the Kenyon women 560 points.
