Men's Tennis Defeats Grand Valley State;
Lauren Bergstrom Named Women's Division III Great Lakes Regional Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Grand Valley State 3
The Calvin men's tennis team remains undefeated inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. On Wednesday, Calvin upset Division II Grand Valley State 6-3 to improve to 3-0 inside the facility including 2-0 against four-year institutions.
Grand Valley took the early lead, winning two of the three doubles points and then gained a 3-1 lead with a win at No. 1 singles. Calvin's lone point in the early going of the match came from the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Marcus Zeilstra (Oak Brook, IL) and Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) as they picked up an 8-3 win over Grand Valley's tandem of Tony Dang and Marc Roesslein.
Ranked 10th in the latest set of Division III Central Region rankings, Calvin rallied to win the final five singles points however to gain the come-from-behind win.
DeMaagd gained a key victory in the final flurry, winning 6-7 (4-6), 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 singles with sophomores Matt and Andrew DeVlieger picking up wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively with Matt DeVlieger winning 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 and Andrew DeVlieger winning 7-5, 6-3.
Also coming up with singles victories for the Knights were senior Nick Steenstra (Unity Christian HS) at No. 5 singles (6-1, 6-1) and senior Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) at No. 6 singles (6-0, 4-6, 6-0). The win by Rescorla was the third three-set win of the match for the Knights.
Grand Valley State entered the match ranked sixth in the most recent Division II Midwest Regional rankings.
Calvin returns to action on March 20 when it hosts Wheaton (IL) at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center at 4:30 p.m. Wheaton is currently ranked 14th in the Division III Central Region rankings.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Calvin College senior Lauren Bergstrom has been named the Division III Women's Great Lakes Regional Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
The USTFCCCA selects the top track athlete, field athlete, and coach for the eight regions in Division III track and field.
A native of Rochester, Minnesota, Bergstrom is receiving the honor for the first time. A graduate of Rochester Century High School, Bergstrom will receive the award on Thursday night at banquet in Terre Haute, Indiana, preceeding the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Prior to the national meet, Bergstrom posted the nation's second fastest time in the 800 meters (2:10.65). She will not compete in the 800 meters this weekend but will compete in the mile run where she is seeded fifth (4:56.81) and on Calvin's distance medley relay team which is seeded seventh (11:57.59).
The NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships will be hosted this Friday and Saturday by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. This weekend will also mark the first time that Calvin will be sending athletes to the indoor track and field championships. Bergstrom is one of nine athletes from Calvin competing at the national meet.
