Women's Basketball Falls in MIAA Tournament Semifinals To Saint Mary's

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Saint Mary's 67, Calvin 58

NOTRE DAME, IN -- The 2008-09 season came to an end for the Calvin women's
basketball team in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday evening as the
Knights were defeated by the host Belles of Saint Mary's 67-58.

Saint Mary’s (17-9) advances to Saturday’s MIAA Tournament Championship
game to face Hope – a 79-52 winner over Albion in Thursday’s other
semifinal game.

Calvin (16-10) saw its season cut short of the MIAA Tournament Championship
game for the second straight year.

The Knights turned the ball over 24 times on Thursday night including 14 times
in the first half as Calvin trailed 31-23 at halftime.

Calvin closed to within six at 31-25 in the opening moments of the second half
but Saint Mary’s responded with a 14-4 run to building a 45-29 lead.

A late rally allowed Calvin to creep to within eight at 58-50 with 2:21 to
play but Saint Mary’s responded with a layup and a free throw to affectively
put the game out of reach.

Calvin was led in scoring by junior Brook Van Eck (Lowell HS) who popped in 12
points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Senior Sarah Partridge (East Lansing HS) also had 10 points.

Partridge was one of seven Calvin seniors who closed out their collegiate
careers for the Knights on Thursday. In addition to Partridge, seniors Kristi
Brummel (South Christian HS), Marissa Walker (Cedar Springs HS), Marcia Harris
(Grand Rapids Christian HS), Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS), Lauren Roodvoets
(South Christian HS) and Emily Schrotenboer (South Christian HS) concluded
their collegiate careers on Thursday. All seven seniors saw playing time
against Saint Mary’s.

Calvin sports information student assistant Chaz Amidon will have a complete
wrap-up on Thursday’s semifinal loss and the conclusion of the careers of the
seven Calvin seniors later on Friday.
