WOMEN'S TENNIS

The Calvin women's tennis team held its inaugural dual match inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center on Saturday and treated a home crowd to an 8-1 victory over regionally-ranked Carthage College.

The match also served as Calvin's season opener. Prior to the match, a short program honoring the benefactors of the facility took place.

A year ago, Calvin finished with an 18-5 dual match record, establishing a Calvin single-season record for dual match victories. One of those victories was against Carthage.

The Knights picked up their second consecutive win over the Reds by jumping out to a 3-0 lead with wins at all three doubles flights. Picking up doubles victories for Calvin were sophomores Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kaitlin Spoelhof (Holland Christian HS) at No. 1 doubles, juniors Rachel Strikwerda (Holland Christian HS) and Jill VanVeen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 2 doubles and juniors Elisabeth Geenen (Holland Christian HS) and Rachel DeGroot (Lombard, IL) at No. 3 doubles.

Calvin then took five of the six singles points with Oosterhouse winning at No. 1 singles, Spoelhof at No. 2 singles, Geenen at No. 3 singles, Strikwerda at No. 4 singles and DeGroot at No. 6 singles.

Strikwerda and DeGroot both claimed come-from-behind three-set victories with Strikwerda winning 10-4 in the third set super-tiebreaker and DeGroot winning 10-7 in her third set super-tiebreaker.

Calvin will now prepare for a challenging week of action as they will travel to the University of Chicago on Friday and to Wheaton (IL) on Saturday. Chicago is ranked third in the most recent set of Division III Central Region rankings while Wheaton is ranked eighth in the region.
