Track Athletes Post NCAA III Qualifying Times;
Hockey Team Wins First Round Game at Regional Tournament

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ALLENDALE -- A group of Calvin track athletes had sensational performances on day one of the Grand Valley State Big Meet Invitational Friday night. On the women's side, senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) posted an NCAA III (indoor) automatic qualifying time of 2:10.65 in taking fourth place. Senior Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) also had a big night, posting a season-best time of 17:58.23 in the 5,000 meters which was good for 18th place.

On the men's side, senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) ran wild, finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters with an NCAA III (indoor) automatic qualifying time of 14:25.75. The time was less than half-a-second off the Calvin outdoor 5,000 meter record time of 14:25.51 set by Joel Klooster in 2002.

In addition, senior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) had an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 14:44.17 in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) also had a season-best time of 14:55.21 in the 5,000 meters.

Finally, senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) had an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 49.50 in the 400 meters that was good for fourth place.

Calvin will continue competition tomorrow at the GVSU Big Meet Invitational.

HOCKEY

MOLINE -- The Calvin hockey team picked up 6-2 victory over Lansing Community College in the opening game of the ACHA Division III North Regional Tournament Friday night at the Southside Ice Arena. The Knights will play Delta Community College at 6:30 p.m. at the Southside Ice Arena with a trip to the ACHA Division III National Tournament on the line. Calvin fans are encouraged to attend and support the Knights.

In its win over Lansing Community College, Calvin (16-7-2) erupted for four third period goals to break open a one-goal game. The contest was tied at one after one period with the Knights taking a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Sophomore Bart Tocci had two goals for Calvin. Junior Caleb Barthel, senior Eric Baker, senior Lucas Huyser-Wierenga and freshman Scott Plakmeyer also scored goals for the Knights.

Plakmeyer, Huyser-Wierenga and Baker picked up assists while freshman Matthew Zantingh also had two key assists for the Maroon and Gold.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Pasma was also stellar for the Knights, making 28 saves. Calvin held a 44-30 shots on goal advantage.
