Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Compete Indoors at Grand Valley Open;
Marcia Harris Receives ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Basketball Honors

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams continued their indoor campaigns on Friday night at the Grand Valley State Open and several Calvin athletes had solid performances.

Leading the list was senior Julie Bratt (Lyden, WA) who won the triple jump with a leap of 36-2. Another highlight came from junior Heather Koning (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who took second in the women's 400 meters with a time of 58.58, just missing an NCAA III indoor provisional qualifying time. In the 800 meters, sophomore Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big performance in her first race of the track season, placing second with a time of 2:22.51.

Other notables included junior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL) placing fifth in the mile run (5:10.50), sophomore Gretchen Braymer (Erie, {PA) taking sixth in the 3,000 meters (10:48.74), freshman Kelly Larsen (Decorah, IA) taking second in the 5,000 meters (19:13.15), junior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) placing fourth in the pole vault (10-8) and Calvin's 4x400 meter relay taking second with a time of 4:03.80.

On the men's side, freshman Thad Winkle (South Christian HS) had a solid outing in the 400 meters, placing fourth with a time of 51.18. Junior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) was second in the 3,000 meters (8:47.38), junior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.65) and sixth in the high jump (6-3 1/2), sophomore Eric Michel (Naperville, IL) was ninth in the pole vault (14-1 3/4) and sophomore Ken Echtinaw (Caledonia HS) was eighth in the shot put (45-7) to round out Calvin's notable performances.

Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete at the GVSU Big Meet next Friday and Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin College senior Marcia Harris has received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in women's basketball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Harris has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV third team in the college division.

To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must have a minium grade point average of 3.30 and must be a starter or a key reserve. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is sponsored by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA).

A psychology major, Harris carries a 3.56 grade point average. A year ago, she was named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Harris has been sidelined for the last month with an injury but hopes to play in the coming week. In 10 games of action this year, Harris is averaging 19.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. A three-time first team All-MIAA selection, Harris also sits in second place on the Calvin career scoring list with over 1,400 career points.
